Created by Erin Foster, Nobody Wants This, is a famous romantic comedy show featuring Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, and others. The show premiered on September 26, 2024 and gained instant virality because of its refreshing tale about romance and good-natured humor.

Nobody Wants This is about the unconventional relationship that blossoms between Joanne and Noah. While Joanne is a dating podcaster and an agnostic woman who is outspoken, Noah, is an unconventional Rabbi that is introduced to Joanne by her best friend Ashley.

While the show was an instant hit and was loved by viewers and critics alike, it also drew flak for its depiction of Jewish women. With the second season of the show about to release, Erin Foster admitted in an interview with Vanity Fair, that she did not expect the criticism and even co-showrunner Jenni Konner spoke a few words about how the criticism has made the show’s creators more careful going forward in Season 2.

Nobody Wants This is aimed as a light-hearted romantic comedy that looks at two people in their 30s, discovering a unique form of love, as one is agnostic and another is religious. The show was an instant success and the story of the fiery podcaster Joanne and the reserved but handsome Rabbie Noah, touched the hearts of the people.

However, in an interview with Vanity Fair, showrunners Erin Foster and Jenni Konner, spoke about how the show was targeted for being insensitive towards Jewish women and showcasing stereotypes.

Konner mentioned that “no one is trying to reinvent anything…like any show, the second season is when you really start to develop your characters. So we develop Esther more and show why she behaves that way…” Konner mentions this as the character of Esther was criticized for being stereotyped as a Jewish woman and it seems that the creators have decided to make her character more developed.

Erin Foster admits in the interview that she did not expect the criticism about Jewish people and especially, women. “I was honestly very surprised, and I was disappointed. Find me another Jewish rom-com showing Jewish people in such a positive light…It’s something that I take very seriously as someone who converted…I don’t find anything wrong with it!” she states.

According to Vanity Fair, Nobody Wants This will bring in a female Rabbi into the writer’s room for Season 2 so that the show’s writing is updated. However, Konner and Foste both maintain that they are working on the criticism but essentially, everything remains the same.

While showrunners Foster and Konner have tried to stay open about the criticism that was levied upon the show about the depiction of Jewish people, they have also maintained their stance and have stated that they did everything possible to make the show wholesome and nuanced.

With more Jewish people being involved in Nobody Wants This Season 2, it seems that the creators have understood that the viewers and critics can take offence to even a slight misrepresentation and it is best that anything that is perceived as problematic, is immediately removed. Bringing in a female Rabbi in Season 2 is a good way forward and any loose ends that appeared in Season 1 will thankfully go away in the upcoming season.

Nobody Wants This is available on Netflix.
