Sex and the City characters all reunite in HBO's 2021 reboot series And Just Like That. The reboot also saw Sarah Jessica Parker returning as the fashion enthusiast and New York City-based newspaper columnist, Carrie Bradshaw.

HBO's breakthrough romantic comedy series Sex and the City premiered in 1998, where we meet the main heroines in their thirties.

After almost two decades and two movies, they return in the reboot series in their fifties. As confirmed by Miranda in one of the episodes from Season 1, Carrie is 55 years old in And Just Like That.

More on this in our story.

Carrie is in her 50s in And Just Like That

Starting from Sex and the City, Carrie's age is pretty easy to determine in the parent series. In one of the episodes from Season 1, she mentions that she is 32 years old, which means that the parent series is set in her early thirties.

Carrie also grows up six years before the show ends in 2004 with Season 6. She mentions that she is now 38 years old, also evident in Season 6 Episode 15, titled Catch-38. This also suggests that each season of Sex and the City was set one year apart from each other.

After two movies, Carrie is now 55 years old in And Just Like That, as mentioned by Samantha in one episode in Season 1.

Carrie's story was envisioned as a reboot to Sex and the City and all the main characters are in their 50s.

Why is Carrie's age important in And Just Like That?

In addition to the natural time jump from Sex and the City, Carrie's age is important in And Just Like That, as it highlights an often neglected trope in cinema of older women.

While there are many shows revolving around young and desirable women, balancing their careers, love lives and friendships, older women are often categorised as mothers and aunts.

Screenwriter and director Alankrita Shrivastava discussed this lack of representation of older women in cinema:

''There’s an obsession with this virginal, young female character being the epitome of what you show in terms of the female landscape, and the older women get categorised into desexualised characters, like aunts, mothers, and grandmothers.''

However, the reboot series changes that by picking up after two decades and meeting these characters in their 50s. Carrie and her friends' lives are just as messy as their thirties, and the show explores womanhood through a mature lens.

After six seasons of Carrie's turbulent relationship with Mr. Big, she is finally married to him in And Just Like That, only for him to die in the premiere, which creator Michael Patrick King discussed was important for the reboot in an interview with Vanity Fair:

"It's also really interesting to me because 55 and single is a whole new ballpark. You thought 35 and single was a story. 55 and single is a story as well."

From her bold fashion choices to owning up to her sexuality, Carrie proves that age is just a number. She still lives her best (and messy) life in the reboot series.
