There has been quite a bit of confusion about Lucy Chen’s age in the ABC police procedural The Rookie. Lucy Chen is an interesting character with the ability to take on risks and difficulties with ease. Her appearance since the very first season of The Rookie has left a mark. Besides her talent as a police sergeant, her relationship with Tim in the series also adds to the overall intrigue.

In the eighth episode of season 7, when Tim and Lucy were hospitalized, Lucy’s hospital band had her date of birth. Her date of birth was written as March 24, 1988, on the band. However, whether the date mentioned on the hospital band was correct or not is not confirmed.

In the fifth episode of the second season, Lucy Chen mentioned her age. She said that she was 28 years old. If her age was 28 years in the second season, then at present she would be in her early to mid-thirties.

It cannot be denied that The Rookie’s timeline is a bit confusing. There have been minor discrepancies regarding Lucy's age in the series. However, it can be understood that she is in her early or mid-thirties in the current season of the series.

There is also a ten-year age gap between Tim and Lucy in the series. Their relationship faced some difficulties in the beginning. It was because of the difference in their ranks and also their age gap. However, after Lucy took the exam, she has now become a sergeant.

This leads to her and Tim sharing the same rank. Hence, their age gap or relationship would not face any condescending attitude from others.

She mentioned her age herself for the first time in the fifth episode of the second season when her parents were having some troubles. Her mother had come to her house and told her that she would be getting a divorce.

When Lucy called her father, she came to know that the reason for the divorce was a bagel. However, at the end of the episode, Lucy’s mother goes back to her husband, and Lucy says to Jackson:

“No wonder I can’t find a healthy relationship. My dysfunctional parents are why I am 28 and still single.”

Lucy Chen’s journey in The Rookie makes her a fan favorite character. In the first season, she entered the series as a rookie cop with dreams of achieving her goals. She took many risks and gained experience through her job. She is not a one-dimensional character.

Rather, her character is complex and relatable. Her relationship with Jackson from the very first season added to the show. Her relationship dynamics with other characters are also strong.

The Rookie dives into the world of police work in a procedural manner. The storyline showcases the lives of many police officers. Apart from the police work, the personal lives of the characters are also shown in the series.

From the friendships to the rivalries, this series shows it all. There is a layer of realism as well. Each season brings more character growth and development. This makes the story worth watching.
