While attending the University of Michigan, The Golden Bachelor star Mel Owens, 66, used to play football for the Michigan Wolverines. After his graduation, he was selected by, Los Angeles Rams, where he was picked for the 1981 NFL Draft.

After spending nine years on his sports career, he chose to retire and moved to Orange County. There, he started practicing law, specializing in sports injuries. Soon, he met his first wife and had two sons:

"It was during this time that he met his first love, and together they had two sons. While life took an unexpected turn with the passing of his father and the end of his marriage, Owens channeled his energy into being the best father he could be, focusing on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams," mentioned ABC.

However, as Mel Owens shared in his USA Today interview, it was a "long" marriage, and it didn't work out. But he wished his first wife well, as he loved being married to her. He has two sons, Lucas and Andre, with whom he "cherishes" a great relationship.

Before joining the ABC show, Mel Owens got himself into a controversial start. It happened after his podcast appearance, where he mentioned that he would "cut off" participants who were 60 or more. It was on the University of Michigan's college football podcast.

However, later he apologized for the comments he had made. But it didn't end well for him as the aftermath of his comments continued during the show's premiere. He also faced some of the participants sharing their thoughts on his "age" remarks.

The Golden Bachelor Season 2 Episode 5 revealed the final three participants. This included Cindy, Debbie, and Peg. They would be moving forward in the show and go on Home Town dates with Mel Owens.

His decision to choose Cheryl and Nicolle for elimination shocked some of the cast members, as they had a good bond with him prior to the latest Rose Ceremony. While leaving the show, one of the eliminated participants, Nicolle suggested whether she should be the next Golden Bachelorette.
