Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has always been a fan favorite for bringing in new life and energy into the iconic, long-running franchise. But as the show nears its final season, one big question remains: Will the journey really end there?

With Paramount's upcoming $8 billion merger with Skydance, the fate of a spinoff now hangs in the balance.

So, what does this new ownership mean for the much-hoped-for next spin-off? It could either launch a new era or bring everything to a halt.

And we're here to unpack everything we know so far.

The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spinoff everyone wants — but not without Skydance’s green light

There's a strong desire from the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds creative team to keep the universe alive even after the series concludes. At San Diego Comic-Con, co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman didn't shy away from revealing that a Kirk-focused spinoff is already being imagined.

He told Collider;

"We are really actually, in fairness, agitating to do a spin-off..."

Goldsman envisions a series bridging the gap between Kirk's first day aboard the Enterprise and the events of The Original Series. It's a period that has never been fully explored, and it's rich with untold adventures.

Henry Alonso Myers, the other half of the showrunning duo, echoed this hope in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly. He said;

"Nothing would make us happier than to continue telling the stories of how Pike's crew transitions to Kirk's crew..."

That means more screen time for key characters like Sulu and McCoy and even deeper arcs for existing ones like Uhura and Spock.

But all of this depends on the future leadership at Paramount. Skydance's acquisition brings a new playbook, and whether that includes more Star Trek: Strange New Worlds remains a question mark.

Skydance is taking over — but will they take Star Trek higher?

Once the Paramount-Skydance deal becomes official on August 7, the new ownership could significantly shift the direction of the Star Trek franchise. Backed by RedBird Capital and led by David Ellison, Skydance is stepping into a powerful position. And considering Ellison has already worked on recent Star Trek films as executive producer, there's reason to believe he values the brand.

Still, change isn't always smooth. The merger journey included political hiccups and FCC delays, which stirred controversy around issues like diversity policies and media bias at CBS News. Now that it's cleared, Skydance is expected to reevaluate the company's IP slate - Star Trek included. This could mean a major overhaul of how the franchise is handled across TV and film.

There's buzz that Skydance might explore broader licensing or new streaming partnerships, shaking up how Strange New Worlds and its spinoffs are developed or distributed.

Given that the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spinoff's sets and cast are largely already in place, the potential to fast-track a new show, possibly titled Star Trek: Year One, is real. But it's not guaranteed unless Skydance buys into the vision.

With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds nearing its final season, the possibility of a spinoff rests squarely in the hands of Skydance. The creative team is ready. The cast is in place. The stories are waiting to be told.

But whether the stars align for Star Trek: Year One depends on what Skydance decides to prioritize. For now, the future of the franchise hangs in the balance - but hope, as always in Starfleet, lives on.
