It: Welcome to Derry finally saw Pennywise meet his fateful end, as the horrific clown seemingly dies at the end. However, one of the interesting things that should be noted about the show is that the manner in which Pennywise dies in the show is different from the previous adaptations that have been made of the Stephen King novel.

While in previous adaptations of the novel, we see Pennywise die in a cracking manner, and then by disfigurement in the second adaptation, the death portrayed in this prequel series is quite different.

In It: Welcome to Derry, we see Pennywise slowly dissolve into an ink-like appearance before he morphs into all of his previous forms before ultimately fading away.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Barbara Muschietti explained the reason behind this change in the visualisation of death.

Barbara Muschietti explains why they changed the way Pennywise dies in It: Welcome to Derry

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Barbara Muschietti explained the reason behind this change in manner of death for Pennywise in It: Welcome to Derry. Speaking about the change, she mentions that the previous adaptations were directed by her brother, Andy Muschietti, who resonated more with the previous styles of death. She also spoke about how it was very important for the creators to keep giving something different to the audience to avoid a sense of monotony.

"God knows if that is the visual way that our characters have to interpret or explain his temporary demise. Maybe he's just sitting there in the same spot, and 27 years go by. That is what's so magical about IT. What is a deadlight? It can be whatever we want it to be."

She even went on to appreciate her brother's creativity, stating that he has always had a very visual and creative mind, making it very easy for everybody on set to understand his vision. This was especially because Andy was very clear about what he wanted throughout, making things much easier.

Speaking about the different kinds of deaths, Muschietti explained that while all three deaths are different, they are all in keeping with the various kinds of deaths shown in Stephen King's famous novel, It.

However, while she appreciated her brother's perfectionism and creativity, she also mentioned that the death she gave to Pennywise in her adaptation is the most befitting for the character, especially given how theatrical he is.

Season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry has now come to an end, but there has been no announcement for Season 2 so far. All episodes of Season 1 are available to stream on HBO Max.
