The first episode of the most anticipated crime drama Task is out now, and Robbie’s story is definitely worth diving into. The premise of Task denoted that the series will have a cat-and-mouse chase of Mark Ruffalo’s Tom Brandis following Tom Pelphrey’s Robbie Prendergast.
However, Robbie is not just a simple antagonist. He is a complex with a distinct moral compass. In the first episode, we see that Robbie’s heist takes a completely different direction. After their heist goes awry, he ends up with a much larger issue than he already has.
Please be prepared for the spoilers ahead.
Robbie and his team messes up the heist in Task
After Robbie, Cliff, and Peaches entered a house for their next loot, they were not prepared for what was about to happen. The three of them wore masks to conceal their identities and prepared to go home with money. However, when they arrived inside the house, they faced retaliation.

The man and the woman in the house began to fight back instead of quietly listening to the intruders’ words. The man was initially captured by them and tied up; however, the woman kept fighting and even bit Peaches. She was also able to see Peaches’ face by removing his mask. However, in the end, she is also restrained. Robbie and Cliff try to find the money in the house, but cannot find anything, even after searching immensely.
Right then, another man entered the house and killed Peaches. This leads Robbie and Cliff to begin a fight with the man, and they eventually kill him along with the couple. Their mission, which was supposed to loot the money, turned completely sideways after the man arrived and killed Peaches.
After creating chaos in the house when Robbie and Cliff were about to leave, Robbie noticed a bag full of money, which he took. However, before he could step out of the house, a little boy came in front of them asking if they were friends of his parents. Robbie quickly answers that they are indeed friends of his parents and then decides to take the child with him to his house.

Not only does he kill the house members, but he also ends up taking the kid with him. Though if we wanted to, he could have easily killed the child. However, his moral compass and his nature prevented him from harming the child. Rather, he took the child to safety.
This aspect of Robbie’s character is truly thought-provoking. It is an indication of the aspects of good and evil that Task creator Brad Ingelsby depicts in a nuanced manner through this episode.
The first episode of Task sets the stage for the upcoming complications that will come forward after this deadly shootout and kidnapping. At the end of the episode, we see that Mark Ruffalo’s Tom Brandis arrives at the crime scene and also finds that Robbie has taken the child, as the child is not present in the basement.
Robbie’s impulsive decision to take the child with him would undoubtedly put him at even more danger than he already is in Task. The heist was not just a catastrophic failure, but also would lead to many complications as the series progresses.
