Landman Season 2 made headlines right after the premiere, and one of the reasons is the new additions to the hit drama. And among the new actors is Sam Elliot, who appears as Tommy's father.

As seen at the end of episode 1, T.L. is at a nursing home, staring at the sunset in his wheelchair with a little disappointment on his face. And after watching such an acclaimed figure in the series, many might have wondered how Elliot got the role.

Interestingly, it was Taylor Sheridan who pulled Elliot back into acting. The two had already worked on 1883, and when the maker called him, Elliot shared that he wasn't doing anything. This was shared by Elliot in an interview as he said:

"I ended up on the phone with [Taylor], and he said, 'What are you up to?' And I said, 'Nothing, man, I haven't been doing anything since we worked together.'"

He continued:

"And he said, 'Well, I'm about to put your ass back to work.' And that's how it came to be."

So, this is how Sam Elliot ended up in Landman Season 2 and is now playing a key figure alongside Billy Bob Thornton.

Sam Elliot joined Landman Season 2 after Taylor Sheridan's phone call

Actors typically audition to play a certain role in TV series and films. But for Landman Season 2, it seems like Taylor Sheridan knew exactly who he wanted to play Tommy’s father right from the start.

As mentioned above, The Hero star Sam Elliot appears as T.L. in Season 2, and fans cannot imagine someone else playing the role. The actor shared in an interview that Sheridan called him and asked him to join the series.

Co-star Billy Bob Thornton was also present during the interview and shared that Elliot was the "perfect person" to be cast for T.L. He felt they shared a similar presence, and because they already knew each other personally, it felt like a natural fit.

He even admitted that the news made him tear up, and his wife reacted the same way. Another reason why Thornton was so excited for Elliot is that he got more time to spend with him, and the two had a great time.

Additionally, the two actors had previously worked on the Western classic Tombstone and later reunited for Sheridan’s 1883. Thornton spoke highly of Elliot and also mentioned him being someone he admires.
