The Pitt is returning for Season 2 on January 8, 2026, as announced by HBO Max recently. The upcoming season will be set ten months after the last events of Season 1, on the 4th of July weekend. Dr. Frank Langdon will return from rehab, and viewers will be meeting Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, played by Sepideh Moafi.

Dr. Al-Hashimi is a new attending physician at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center's emergency room, who was hired in Robby's place when he was on his sabbatical. But she's not just a replacement hire and will have a significant effect on the hospital and how it works in The Pitt Season 2.

How Sepideh Moafi's character will bring a huge change in The Pitt Season 2

The Pitt's Robby, aka Dr. Michael Robinavitch, is very particular about how things take place in his department, and no matter who runs it in his absence, he is bound to clash with that person. That's exactly what will happen when he has to work with Dr. Al-Hashimi. Noah Wyle, who plays Robby in the show, told Entertainment Weekly about his character's dynamic with Moafi's, saying,

"I don't know that he would really be totally accepting of anybody that was moving into his role,"

He continued,

"You know, he's very proprietary about the E.D., and he runs his shop in a very specific way."

Thus, the clashes between the two characters will be a crucial plotline in The Pitt Season 2, especially because it takes place over the 4th of July weekend, which is an extremely busy one. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, another way Dr. Al-Hashimi will impact the upcoming season in a significant way is by introducing A.I. to the hospital's management. This new big change will be faced with backlash, especially from Robby. As Wyle pointed out in the interview with Entertainment Weekly,

"Robby's innately suspicious of anything that could potentially allow a hospital to reduce its workforce because of the streamlining,"

He added,

"There are byproducts to employing this kind of technology. One of the unfortunate ones is layoffs, and we're already seeing staffing shortages. The practitioners and the doctors are being stretched pretty thin as it is. So the reward for working better sometimes is more work, not less work."

The changes that Moafi's character will bring could increase efficiency but also cause harm, which will affect the department as a whole. Speaking about her character and how she'll tackle backlash, Moafi told Entertainment Weekly,

"Honestly, I think like any woman in any field, especially a successful woman in any field, you're used to coming up against resistance, especially from your male counterparts,"

She continued,

"She's ready, she's equipped, she's prepared. And like most women, and especially women of color, you are over prepared for whatever challenges you might face. And so I don't think it throws her off."

Thus, incoming patients and having to work with Dr. Langdon aren't the only challenges waiting for Robby in Season 2. He would have to deal with Dr. Al-Hashimi's changes respectfully as well. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the department reacts to this new dynamic as well.

While Moafi is the only cast member joining The Pitt Season 2 in a leading role, a few cast members are joining Season 2 in recurring roles. The new cast members joining are Charles Baker as Troy, Irene Choi as Joy, Laëtitia Hollard as Emma, Lucas Iverson as James, Lawrence Robinson as Brian Hancock, Zack Morris as Jackson Davis, Brittany Allen as Roxie Hamler, Bonita Friedericy as Cora Wilkins, Taylor Handley as Paul Hamler, and Jeff Kober as Duke. Victor Rivas Rivers will guest star as Trent Norris.

The Pitt is created by R. Scott Gemmill, who also serves as showrunner and is an executive producer on the show. Other executive producers of the show are John Wells, Noah Wyle, Michael Hissrich, Erin Jontow, and Simran Baidwan. The production companies behind the show are John Wells Productions, R. Scott Gemmill Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.

The Pitt Season 2 premieres on HBO Max on January 8, 2026.
