The Diplomat Season 3 is gearing up for release in the fall of 2025, and recently Netflix dropped an official teaser for the anticipated political thriller. As confirmed by Netflix, The West Wing star Bradley Whitford will join the cast of the new chapter playing one of the key roles.
Keri Russell will be reprising her role as diplomat Kate Wyler alongside poster Rufus Sewell playing the part of Kate's husband as well as co-diplomat Hal Wyler. Looking back, The Diplomat Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger with President Rayburn's untimely passing and Grace Penn taking his place.
However Kate is able to figure out Grace's involvement in the British naval attack and goes on to fight for the position of vice-presidency. To find out more about what direction The Diplomat Season 3 will take, follow this article.
What will happen in The Diplomat Season 3? Here's what we know so far
The Diplomat Season 2 finale ended with Kate discovering a number of unbelievable things that led to a Domino effect in the world of diplomacy. It is eventually learnt that Grace Penn (Allison Janney) played a major role in carrying out the terrorist attack on the British naval vessel (which we saw in The Diplomat Season 1).
The main motto behind the attack was to restrain Scotland from becoming independent of the UK so that the Scottish nuclear submarine base named Creegan does not shut down. When the news is broken to President Rayburn (played by Michael McKean), he is not able to process it well and passes away in a state of shock. After Sir Rayburn's death, V-P Penn steps up as President but Kate is already aware of her involvement in the recent terrorist plot.
Now, as The Diplomat Season 3 unfolds with Grace taking matters in hand, Kat prepares for her run for vice-presidency with Hal helping her with the campaign work. A new face, Todd Penn (played by Bradley Whitford), the better half of Grace Pen, comes in the picture and he is also portrayed as First Gentleman — an individual whose presence has 'an unnerving' effect on Kate.
But, how he exactly fits in the story is still being kept under wraps. According to Tudum, Whitford reportedly opened up about his casting in The Diplomat Season 3, saying:
"I was thrilled when I heard that Debora [Cahn, creator, showrunner, and executive producer] was interested in me doing something. I had no idea what it was, but I love the show. I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting too. It’s an amazing cast."
The Diplomat's EPJanice Williams also reportedly spoke highly of Whitford's casting:
"Bradley was the perfect addition to what is already a dream cast."
The Diplomat Season 3 has already wrapped filming and the latest chapter will have a lot to offer with 'big groups and lots of people' on the production unit, as confirmed by Keri Russell in a recent statement. The new season will be a bigger challenge for Kate as she steps out of her smaller diplomat shoes and takes up greater responsibilites for a nation at stake.
