Volchek's fate in the Jensen Ackles-starrer action thriller Countdown made for one of the most surprising turns of events for an episode that isn't the season finale. Borys Volchek was the major antagonist in the task force's investigation of the Homeland Security agent Robert Darden's murder.
As a task force, involving Jensen Ackles' Mark Meechum, investigates the murder to find a conspiracy in the Department of Homeland Security, they're faced with a nuclear-level danger. Volchek is looking to get revenge after his brother's death, and he intends to turn Los Angeles into Chernobyl. He might even succeed if the task force doesn't win in their race against time in Episode 10 of Countdown.
However, the episode ends with an extremely shocking twist. Keep reading to find out what happened to Volchek.
What happened to Volchek in Countdown Episode 10?

Throughout the nine episodes of Countdown, it appeared as if Volchek was too smart and had too many failsafes for the task force to succeed in saving the team and the city. However, Episode 10 took a drastic turn.
By the end of Episode 9, Volchek and Andrej have set up their trucks and their bombs to go off at the click of a button and to blow up the entirety of Los Angeles. The task force discovers the weapons and is in a race against time to disarm the bombs and find the perpetrators responsible. The episode ends on a cliffhanger when Meechum and Volchek are in a face-off, and Volchek hits the detonator before the screen goes black.
In classic Countdown fashion, where an episode ends with a cliff-hanger and the next one resolves it early on, Episode 10 opens with Volchek hitting the detonator, but instead of a nuclear blast of epic proportions, nothing happens. It is later revealed that the other half of the task force, intent on disarming the weapons, had removed the tablets that were controlling the nuclear materials just in time.

One would think Volchek would have another failsafe just in case, but it seems he doesn't, so he takes off running with Meechum and Oliveras now following him. In classic Volchek fashion, he decides to take it upon himself to detonate the weapons and tries to make his way up to the roof so that he can shoot at the trucks carrying the weapons, in hopes of triggering a detonation.
However, just as he is firing, hoping to succeed in his mission and blow up Los Angeles, Meechum catches up to him and, in the most shocking twist of the season, fires at him, tearing right through his face. Volchek dies, and the threat is neutralized.
One would think that Countdown would save the epic twist for the season finale; however, it turns out they have a few more tricks up their sleeves for the last three episodes of the season. (No spoilers, but there might be a time jump somewhere along the way).
