Hulu greenlights pilot for boarding school mystery Foster Dade based on Nash Jenkins’ novel

Foster Dade has found a home on Hulu. The streaming giant recently ordered a pilot episode for the young adult drama series according to Deadline.

Based on Nash Jenkins’ 2023 debut novel, Foster Dade Explores the Cosmos, the show is set in an elite boarding school on the East Coast and “explores privilege, scandal, sexuality and masculinity amid the rise of social media, millennial anxiety and pharmaceuticals,” according to Hulu’s official logline.

In the book, an unnamed narrator recounts how he is moved into a dorm room that was previously occupied by the titular character, who had studied in the school in 2008 but was later expelled due to a scandal that the narrator decides to investigate.

Details about Hulu’s pilot order for Foster Dade

According to Deadline, Hulu seems to be interested in creating a show based on Nash Jenkins’ young adult novel and has already ordered a pilot episode. The series will be called Foster Dade, based on the novel’s name, Foster Dade Explores the Cosmos and will focus on a variety of themes as mentioned in Hulu’s logline.

The teen mystery series will be written and executively produced by Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran. While Greg Berlanti is the co-creator of the famous Netflix show, You, Bash Doran is known for Life After Life. Further, Warner Bros. Television will also be a part of the show and Berlanti Productions is under an overall deal with them.

In April, Hulu bought the Berlanti and Doran’s spec script for the project based on Nash Jenkins’ novel and fast-tracked it for a pilot episode. According to Deadline, Hulu’s model has been atypical for the streaming giant as Hulu has now been increasingly siding with the pilot development model and ordering comedy and drama pilots for shows.

Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran will be the executive producers and writers of the show and Foster Dade is one of Berlanti’s three drama projects that are co-written by him this year. Other projects include Stillwater with Carly Wray, based on the Skybound comics, which will air on Prime Video, and the next one is a family drama for HBO Max with Doran again. Apart from all this, Berlanti is one of the most famous producers currently and has worked on Dawson’s Creek, Arrow, Riverdale, and more.

Bash Doran on the other hand, has written for series like Boardwalk Empire and has created the shows like Traitors and Life after Life. She was also the consulting producers for Netflix’s Beef. She is also associated with the movie Henry, which will be shot in 2026 and star Ralph Fiennes. She is also developing a limited series for MGM Television with Anne Hathaway and an anthology series for Apple TV+.
