The Humans cast has been loved over the years for their outstanding performances, whether portraying humans or synths. The AMC series premiered its first season in 2015 and ended after releasing the third season three years later.

However, even in this short span and with only three seasons released to date, Humans marked its name in the list of popular sci-fi series, thanks to its unique storyline.

The synopsis of Humans on Apple TV gives a clear overview of the story and what it’s all about, stating that the series is:

"Set in a parallel present where the latest must- have gadget for any busy family is a 'Synth' — a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to humans. These incredible machines share our homes, jobs, and lives, becoming the objects of our fear, lust, hatred, affection, and even love."

Created by Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent, the series includes Katherine Parkinson, Gemma Chan, and Lucy Carless in the lead roles. The drama, based on Real Humans by Lars Lundström, has scored almost 8 stars on IMDb from 45,000 viewers, and there's a good reason why, thanks to its storyline and characters.

So, who were the characters that turned this sci-fi series into a masterpiece? Let's have a look!

Humans cast and characters who made the series a sci-fi hit

Mia (played by Gemma Chan): Mia is one of the most important characters of the series, the synth created by David Elster. The story revolves around her and how the Hawkins family buys her for help, but they soon suspect her behavior as she starts to show more human feelings. The character of Mia appears in all three seasons. Throughout the series, Mia can be seen as a nice and kind synth. However, when needed, she can also be strong and resilient, which adds to her character. Not to forget, Mia is also the first conscious synth.

Laura Hawkins (played by Katherine Parkinson): Laura Hawkins was the first person to doubt the behavior of Mia, also known as Anita. While many viewers perceive her as just a mother, a lawyer, and the wife of Joe Hawkins, it's important to note that she holds a crucial role in the series. Viewers slowly notice that her protective nature shapes her weird relationship with Mia when she questions the synth. Without her, the series would lose much of the emotional tension that makes the Hawkins family's story interesting.

Leo Elster (played by Colin Morgan): To summarize Leo's character in one line, he's half human, half synth, and fully shaken. In the series, Leo is the perfect example of finding answers no matter how far he has to go. Leo is essentially David Elster's son, who was cared for by Mia in his early days. Clearly, he has a sweet spot for synths over humans due to his relationship with them. Along with Mia, Leo also shares close bonds with other synths, such as Fred, Niska, and Max. Not to forget, Leo is also brilliant in technology, which helps him to find Mattie Hawkins, Laura's daughter, leading him to Mia.

Max (played by Ivanno Jeremiah): Max, just like Mia, has a caring nature towards Leo. His kindness and loyalty to his siblings, especially Leo, make him a vital part of the group and show why he's so important to the series' story and emotional impact.

Niska (played by Emily Berrington): If there's one synth you can't ignore, it's Niska. Her character in the series is shown as someone who not everyone would like to take on a challenge. Plus, like other synths, she's very protective of her siblings. The series shows how she never trusted humans because of the disturbing incidents that happened to her, including being forced into a brothel, which she eventually got out of. Not only is she loved by the viewers, but her story also contributes to the overall narrative.

Fred (played by Sope Dirisu): While Fred doesn't appear much in the other two seasons, he is definitely one of the important characters that shaped the overall series. His overall choices in the series demonstrated what it means to be a conscious synth, along with taking a stand for synths. He's also a character who is very protective of himself and can go out of his way to do it, showing that synths can also make their own choices, just like humans.

Joe Hawkins (played by Tom Goodman-Hill): Joe Hawkins is the husband of Laura and father of Mattie, Sophie, and Toby Hawkins. While it appears that his role was only to buy Anita to help his wife with the work, that's not all there is to it. In the series, Joe is seen taking advantage of Anita sexually, proving that even ordinary humans can do wrong and be just as harmful as machines.

The series is currently available on Apple TV to watch.
