The Hunting Wives, the Netflix series based on the novel of the same name by May Cobb, is a dark thriller-drama set in Maple Brook, a fictional town in East Texas. The show follows Sophie O'Neil, a young mother who relocates from Massachusetts with her husband, Graham.

Sophie then gets pulled into the suspicious circle of wealthy housewives who are all hiding something or other. Things take a bad turn when a teenage girl named Abby is found dead in the woods. Many are suspected to be her killer, but the finale reveals who it really was.

Who killed Abby in The Hunting Wives?

Abby’s (played by Madison Wolfe) murder is the central focus of The Hunting Wives. Sophie (played by Brittany Snow) quickly becomes the main suspect when it's discovered that her gun was used to kill Abby. As the investigation continues, other people are suspected, but none of them is the killer. Pastor Pete (played by Paul Teal) becomes a suspect too. He had a history of abducting and assaulting teenage girls, which made it seem like Abby could be his latest victim. Except this time, perhaps he went too far and committed murder.

Another person who is a suspect and then later labelled the killer legally before the case is closed is Jill (played by Katie Lowes), Abby’s boyfriend’s mother, who disapproved of the relationship and even had a violent past with Abby’s family. Multiple factors pointed towards her being the killer, the first one being the fact that she contacted Abby the night she died.

But none of these suspects are actually responsible. The real killer is Margo Banks (played by Malin Åkerman), the socialite who welcomed Sophie into their circle and also stirred up an affair with her. Throughout The Hunting Wives, Margo plays both sides, offering support while slyly manipulating everyone around her. Whenever someone suspects a new person, Margo encourages their theory, steering the investigation away from herself.

The truth is slightly hinted at earlier in The Hunting Wives, when Pastor Pete tells Sophie that Abby had an abortion, something Brad (played by George Ferrier), Abby’s boyfriend, had apparently confessed to him. Sophie tells Abby's mother, Starr, the truth, who thinks Jill's disapproval of Abby and fear of the news of the abortion getting leaked drove her to kill Abby, and she goes to Jill's house with her rifle to avenge her daughter.

When Starr confronts Jill, the latter shoots Starr before she can shoot Jill. We are not shown how the confrontation went, just that Jill killed Starr. When Margo and Callie go to Jill's house to confront her regarding her potentially being Abby's murderer, they see Starr's dead body. Despite their insistence, Jill does not want to call the police, as she does not want to go to jail. To protect herself, Jill points her gun at Margo, but Callie is quicker and kills Jill. Brad gives a final statement that makes Jill the killer of both Abby and Starr, and the case is closed.

But not for Sophie. She finds tampons in Margo’s bathroom, even though Margo had previously said she couldn't use them. Sophie's research on the matter leads her to find out that most women don’t use tampons right after having an abortion. This points towards only one possibility: Margo had the abortion and not Abby. Brad also confirms the same when Sophie confronts him.

So what had really happened? Abby was suspicious that Brad had some sort of a relationship with Margo, and her doubts were confirmed when Pastor Pete told her about Brad's confession. On the night of 18th July, Abby showed up at Margo’s lake house while a small gathering was held there. After Brad and his friend Jamie (played by Chosen Jacobs) left, Abby confronted Margo. She threatened to expose the affair and the abortion. Fearing her secret would destroy her life, Margo grabbed Sophie’s gun and shot Abby.

Since the case had already been closed, Margo does not go to jail, but only The Hunting Wives season two can tell if Margo faced the consequences of her actions.

The Hunting Wives is streaming on Netflix.
