The Buffy reboot received a major update on Thursday, May 15, 2025, in the form of casting actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the lead. This casting news was confirmed by both Sarah Michelle Gellar and possible showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. This casting update has fans wondering if it signifies that the second season of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew won't happen anymore.
However, it must be noted that it isn't officially confirmed that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 2 won't happen anymore. While some believe that the series didn't pull in the streaming numbers, it is important to note that the first season of the acclaimed Star Wars show Andor didn't pull in as many viewers as The Mandalorian; it was greenlit for season 2, which concluded on May 13, 2025.
Also, it is worth noting that the Buffy reboot is ordered on Hulu, which is also owned by Disney. Thus, Ryan Kiera Armstrong's managers and the studio can work out schedules if Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is ever renewed for a second season.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong's casting in Buffy reboot explained:
Sarah Michelle Gellar, the actress who played the titular character Buffy Summers in the iconic female-led show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is returning in the Buffy reboot. While there are no details about the plot, it is believed that the series will pick up approximately 20 years after the end of the original series. It is believed that Buffy Summers may serve as the mentor to Ryan Kiera Armstrong's unnamed character.
Gellar broke the news of Armstrong's casting personally to the latter through a video posted on Instagram with the following caption:
"I want to introduce you to @ryankarmstrong From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room. Welcome to #NewSunnydale #btvs"
The Zuckerman sisters, who are writing the Buffy reboot, also confirmed the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew actress's casting with the following statement:
“We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”
While this news of the Buffy reboot has fans celebrating, Star Wars fans were left wondering about the future of Skeleton Crew. As stated before, it is possible that schedules can be worked around to ensure that Ryan Keira Armstrong could appear in both the Buffy reboot and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 2.
But Jon Watts' comments after the finale of the series from January 2025 had fans wonder about the future of Skeleton Crew.
What did Jon Watts say about the chances of Skeleton Crew Season 2?
Jon Watts, who served as the co-showrunner of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, was interviewed by Entertainment Weekly on January 15, 2025, a day after the release of the finale, "The Real Good Guys". In that interview, Watts was asked about the future of Skeleton Crew, to which Watts replied:
"We haven't gotten deep into those conversations. I live in New York, Ford's [co-showrunner Christopher Ford] in Oakland, but everyone that we work with the show on is essentially in Los Angeles and dealing with real life right now. So in terms of what we're doing next, we're excited to talk to everyone, but obviously everyone has their hands full right now dealing with the tragedies of the fires. But we're excited. We're happy that people are finding the show as well. We've slowly been building viewers over each episode, so that's a really exciting thing to watch that grow, and the word of mouth has been really positive. So we're excited to get back together with everyone and talk about the future soon."
The interviewer, right after Watts' answer, asked the latter if he had an idea where a possible season 2 would go. To this question, Watts answered in the positive, stating:
"We [him and Christopher Ford] have ideas in our heads for sure. We're waiting to find out what everyone else thinks, but we've always had an idea of where this could go even before we made the first season. So there's lots of potential out there and hope everyone sees that."
