I cannot believe that The Simpsons dropped a heartbreaking hint about Moe’s fate in Season 36 finale

The thirty-sixth season of The Simpsons finally concluded, but one recent development didn't sit right with me. I was frankly heartbroken to find out about this one surprise that was revealed in the finale of The Simpsons season thirty-six.

Although portraying future situations is nothing new on The Simpsons, this is the first time the show has veered into genuinely dark territory without caring to smooth over the blunt force of its shock element. Yes, I'm talking about Moe killing himself in a future timeline and its greater significance on the show.

Here's everything that you need to know.

Moe kills himself in a future timeline in The Simpsons

The Simpsons, while primarily set in the fictional town of Springfield, often depicts future timelines. This was exactly the case in the finale episode of the latest season, titled Estranger Things. I expected the episode to once again showcase the altered situations that a glimpse into the future typically presents on the show, with the characters pursuing different careers or having different partners.

However, this episode quickly took a turn for the dark when it was revealed that in this future timeline, Marge died way before Homer, and as a result, the latter was rendered a widower.

As a result of Marge's death, The Simpsons family endured the fallout of familial connections and eventually broke apart. In one particular scene marking Marge's farewell, Moe's gravestone is seen at a distance in the background, being carved out to resemble Moe sticking his head in an oven. This directly points out the fact that Moe was killed off by the show in the background.

Moe has been a part of the show ever since its inception, and I was quite fond of his benevolent nature within his rough exterior. The bar owner character was one of Homer's best friends and had time and again struggled with mental health issues, depression, and suicidal thoughts. I didn't expect the show to portray such dark shades by finally consummating Moe's suicidal thoughts and having him dead in the background.

Moe voice actor opens up on AI replacing him

Actor Hank Azaria is famous for voicing the character of Moe on The Simpsons, apart from the characters of Comic Book Guy and Chief Wiggum. Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Azaria commented on the idea of Artificial Intelligence replacing him to carry on the voice work:

"I imagine that soon enough, artificial intelligence will be able to re-create the sounds of the more than 100 voices I created for characters on The Simpsons over almost four decades. It makes me sad to think about it. Not to mention, it seems just plain wrong to steal my likeness or sound — or anyone else’s.”

The Simpsons is available on FOX.
