BBC's breakthrough period crime series, Peaky Blinders, delivered one of its most intense and emotional storylines in Season 6, the final season of the show.
Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby was surrounded by enemies in both his professional and personal life. While Michael Gray and Oswald Mosley were conspiring against the Birmingham leader, his marriage with Lizzie came to a standstill after their daughter's tragic death.
In a previous interview with Country and Town House, Peaky Blinders star Natasha O’Keeffe (who plays Lizzie Stark) rightly called Season 6 the "darkest" in the series yet:
''I’d say it’s the darkest season, and it might play with the audiences’ minds a bit. It’s very emotional and heavy.''
More on this in our story.
When Peaky Blinders star Natasha O’Keeffe discussed her character's journey over the years
Natasha O’Keeffe's Peaky Blinders character certainly became important as the show progressed, with Lizzie Stark eventually becoming a Shelby after marrying Tommy, following Grace's tragic death.
Discussing Lizzie's growth and journey in the show throughout six seasons with Country and Town House, Natasha O’Keeffe said:
''She has definitely grown somewhat over the series. We first meet her as a part-time pr*stitute – as Lizzie Stark – and it was a few seasons before she became an official Shelby. But each season she has grown more and more important in the Shelby household.''
She added:
''She becomes more of an aide to Tommy as well, as someone he can confide in – to a certain extent, he never lets anyone in too much. She’s definitely grown each season.''
While Lizzie married Tommy and gained access to the Shelby business and family, many fans believed that her character never got the love and respect she deserved. While Aunt Polly was not welcoming enough towards her (because of her former profession), Tommy never completely accepted her as his wife and continued loving Grace.
In the latter seasons, Lizzie even contemplated leaving Tommy because of the dangers of his profession on Charles and Ruby, and his increasing infidelity towards her.
While Lizzie almost decides to divorce Tommy in Season 5, she could not gather enough courage, as Peaky Blinders star Natasha O’Keeffe further discussed:
''She came from a very, very hard upbringing and I think it might have been a worry to have to go back to that. She also is a woman who loves her comforts! But yeah, Lizzie does love Tommy tremendously, that has to be a big thing there too.''
However, after Ruby's tragic death in Season 6, Natasha O’Keeffe's Peaky Blinders character left Tommy, and she moved away with her half-son Charles.
What other projects has Natasha O’Keeffe starred in after Peaky Blinders?
While Natasha O’Keeffe started playing a minor character in Peaky Blinders Season 1, Lizzie eventually became one of the protagonists after Season 3. It has turned out to be a breakthrough role in the actress' career.
O’Keeffe had previously starred in British shows like Misfits and Lip Service before the BBC series, but Peaky Blinders opened the gates to many exciting opportunities in her career.
After Peaky Blinders, O'Keeffe had the recurring roles of Kirsty Wilkinson in The Last Panthers and Charlotte Campbell in Strike, respectively. In 2015, she also starred as Fedora in the British TV fantasy drama series, Jekyll and Hyde.
She also appeared in BBC's Sherlock (episode: The Abominable Bride), RTE One's Rebellion, and had the main role of Dr Emma Grieves in Sky One's Intergalactic.
Recently, Natasha O’Keeffe gained recognition for playing the character of Lanfear in Amazon Prime Video's The Wheel of Time Seasons 2 and 3. The show was earlier canceled after three seasons.
