The 2024 Matlock reboot provides a fresh perspective on the classic courtroom drama with a twist. The story follows Madeline "Matty" Matlock, played by Kathy Bates, a former defence attorney coming out of retirement to take up a job in Jacobson and Moore, a prestigious law firm. Season 1 was critically acclaimed and well-received. However, Matlock Season 2 needs to follow up on some critical threads to maintain viewers' interest in the show.

In Matlock, Matty isn’t just back to practice law — she is on a secret mission. She has information regarding the film, helping to curb a medical study which could have prevented thousands of opioid deaths, including one of her daughters. Therefore, she is on an internal mission while also working as an employee within the system.

The show has been renewed for its season 2, but I am definitely not going to like Matlock Season 2 if it doesn't address these 5 questions.

Here are 5 crucial questions Matlock season 2 must address

1. Will Olympia Expose Julian or Protect Him?

This very question remains the heart of the show’s moral conflict. Olympia now knows her ex-husband hid the buried study, and keeping it the way it is would be crucial to protect him. But she also knows that this would come at the cost of justice for Matty's daughter and thousands of others. Therefore, season 2 must answer this character dilemma. Whether she is going to tell Matty the truth, inclining towards what is right, or she will choose to remain silent.

The showrunner, Jennie Snyder Urman, while speaking to TV Insider, shared:

“There is a big mystery that is launched at the beginning of the second season that we will be following that does extend from the first season. It’s not suddenly a brand new mystery.”

Dodging this layer would lead to undermined characters in season 2.

2. Who is Alfie’s Father, and What Does He Want?

Matlock season 1 had the finale's biggest twist when a man claims to be Alfie's father, throwing Matty's world into chaos. Season 2 must resolve this knot, digging deeper into the truths. Where was he all this time? What exactly happened? Is he a reformed man or a con artist with a hidden agenda? Otherwise, the major cliffhanger would definitely seem meaningless.

3. Will Edwin Support Matty Continuing at the Firm?

Edwin supported Matty’s investigation, thinking it was temporary and would end once she got answers. But now it has become a habit of Matty to be in the courtroom, and she isn't ready to walk away. Edwin, on the other hand, is frustrated that she is putting off retirement while the balance in their marriage is shifting.

While addressing Matty and Edwin's relationship, Snyder said that the couple won't end in divorce:

“I’m as committed to their marriage as I am to my own… It’s not that their marriage is going to be smooth sailing … I don’t think it’s like, ‘I’m going to work, and so we’re going to break up.’ It’s more, ‘I want this and I do not want this. Well, then what do you need to make your life feel as good...?’”

4. Is Julian Going Back to the Firm?

Julian’s arc has quietly become one of the most emotionally compelling threads in Matlock, and his potential return to Jacobson & Moore is full of dramatic possibility. In season 1, Julian resigned after being passed over for a promotion and realised that he could never earn his father's approval. But in the TV Insider interview, Snyder confirmed that he will return for a specific time:

"He definitely wants to be away from his father, but there are certain things that occur, and he has to do some groveling in order to get back for a specific amount of time."

It can be speculated that Julian might return because Olympia convinces him. He might fuel with revenge for the empire that discards him and help Matty to expose the study.

5. Will Others find out about Matty’s hidden investigation?

So far, Billy and Sarah have no idea that Matty is secretly investigating the firm and hiding her true identity. But they are not oblivious — they may start noticing tension between Matty and Olympia, leading them to suspect something's off.

A fun twist could be Billy and Sarah teaming up to uncover the truth, each thinking the other is in the dark too. This could lead to some comedic miscommunication and detective-style antics, while also strengthening their friendship.

Eventually, when they do discover the truth, it is sure to be a major turning point, both emotionally and plot-wise.

Matlock season 2 is expected to be released in 2025.
