The Summer I Turned Pretty star Gavin Casalegno knows fans have strong opinions about Jeremiah Fisher, and he isn't surprised by the noise around his character.

When asked about the online negativity, he admitted to The New York Times,
"They tend to dislike him, yes. I don't check Instagram anymore, so I really haven't seen that much hate."
Gavin Casalegno’s take on the Jeremiah Fisher backlash that comes along with The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3
If you've been religiously following up with The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 every Wednesday, then you already know Jeremiah Fisher has been at the center of a whole lot of drama.
Between the Cabo cheating with Lacie, his engagement with no ring to Belly outside a hospital while Steven's on the hospital bed, and the bachelor weekend, Jeremiah hasn't exactly been painted as the golden retriever boy.
Naturally, this storyline has sent social media into a frenzy, with "Team Conrad" and "Team Jeremiah" debates dominating headlines every week, with everyone mostly leaning towards Team Conrad.
Gavin Casalegno, however, isn't poring over Instagram comments like most actors might.
Speaking with The New York Times, the actor laughed off the backlash, saying,
"The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny. I think it's important to also understand and realize that this is a fictional story - and it's also not me."
For him, the line between playing Jeremiah in The Summer I Turned Pretty and being Gavin is very clear, and he isn't interested in internalizing all the hate directed at his on-screen personality as Jere.
What stood out most was how he described the emotional weight that comes with these reactions. He goes on to explain;
"I don't think there's a single human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens..."
Even with the show's official accounts stepping in with anti-bullying PSAs ahead of Season 3, Gavin admitted it hasn't "really been going so well."
Despite all of this, he seems to keep a sense of humor about the situation, recalling how fans have even approached him in real life just to confess how much they "hate Jeremiah." For him, it's comical - another reminder that viewers are hooked on the story.
The bigger picture: TSITP fandom reactions and Jeremiah’s journey
For longtime fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty, the Jeremiah debate is nothing new, but Season 3 has made it evident. With Belly and Jeremiah now engaged, the fans have zero chill when pointing out Jeremiah's flaws.
Some criticize his impulsiveness - constantly getting high, wanting to splurge on a mirror-glazed cake, falling behind on credit score, while barely keeping up with school.
However, there's another side of fans who see him as a character who wears his heart on his sleeve, even if it's a little bit messy.
Either way, The Summer I Turned Pretty fandom conversation is louder than ever.
Casalegno seems to accept that not every character in a love triangle is meant to be universally adored. In fact, his comments show he sees the bigger picture. By separating himself from the role, he avoids the burnout that often comes when actors get swallowed by fandom wars.
What matters to him is that people are passionate about the show, whether they're rooting for Conrad, Jeremiah, or even just Belly's independence.
In Season 3, episode 7 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, fans finally had their beach love confession when Conrad told Belly not to marry his brother, only for her to turn him down and walk away in tears. With this happening and Jeremiah falling asleep after drinking too much, Belly leans on Taylor for comfort.
