As of now, details of the Disney+ Punisher special remain sparse. And, it is currently unclear if the special has even begun filming. The Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale served as a setup for this special. "Straight to Hell", the ninth and final episode of Born Again Season 1, showed Frank Castle as one of Wilson Fisk's prisoners.
However, the post-credit scene perfectly sets up the events of the upcoming special. Frank is seen in a cage in the post-credit scene, and he tries to chat with the guard. Frank extends his hands to shake the guard's (who probably idolizes the Punisher) hands as a gesture of friendship. However, Frank breaks the guard's hands as soon as the former touches the latter's hands, steals the key, and escapes captivity.
This scene means that the special will surely follow Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle's attempts to bring down the Wilson Fisk regime. However, there is one character I feel should be one of the biggest thorns on Frank's side in the special Disney+ presentation: Bullseye. While a Bullseye vs Frank Castle feels like a one-sided battle in favor of the latter, it is worth noting that Bullseye still has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Bullseye can replace Billy Russo as The Punisher's archenemy in the MCU:
One of the biggest problems with writing for Frank Castle is that he hardly has archenemies. Batman has The Joker, Spider-Man has the Green Goblin, Iron Man has the Mandarin, and Jessica Jones has the Purple Man. However, Frank hardly has an arch enemy. In the comics and even the Netflix series, the only archnemesis (sort of) that Castle has is Jigsaw/Billy Russo.
However, Billy Russo dies in the second season of the Netflix series, which was released back in 2019. Therefore, there is a void in the pantheon of the MCU's Punisher villains. This gap can be filled easily by Bullseye, an expert marksman. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of Bullseye is one of the few characters I feel can survive an encounter with The Punisher.
Furthermore, the fourth episode of Daredevil: Born Again, "Sic Semper Systema", may have inadvertently set up an encounter between Frank Castle and Bullseye/Benjamin Poindexter. Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle returned in this episode, and he berates a retired Matt Murdock for letting the legal system take care of Poindexter for killing Foggy Nelson.
Therefore, the upcoming special focusing on Frank Castle might give fans the fight that Marvel fans have been debating for decades, based on the pages of the comics.
What is the Disney+ special about?
If the post-credit scene of the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale is to be believed, the special will be set right after Castle escapes Fisk's captivity. While I, like every other fan, believed that this scene was a setup for the Frank Castle special, showrunner Dario Scardapane contradicted this sentiment in the Entertainment Weekly interview published after the finale:
"No, it was part of a larger Marvel idea with regards to Jon, the Punisher, and keeping him in the world. He gets taken by the task force, and we didn't want to just have him sit on that island. We needed to give you an idea that Frank is not going to stay locked up for long. It came pretty late in the process, but it became very clear very quickly that this was the thing to do both in terms of telling the story of Daredevil and what's going to come next for Frank and the Punisher."
Do you think that Bullseye is the perfect archenemy for Frank Castle? Let us know.
