CTV/The CW's Canadian romantic drama television series Sullivan's Crossing has made a special place in fans' hearts and has joined the league of comfort shows like Virgin River and This Is Us.

The show, based on author Robyn Carr's novel series, premiered on Canadian CTV on March 19, 2023. After The CW acquired the rights to air it for the American audience, the show found a permanent home in the US and was recently renewed for a fourth season.

Led by stars Chad Michael Murray and Morgan Kohan, Sullivan's Crossing is set in Nova Scotia and follows neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan, who returns to her hometown after legal trouble in Boston.

In an interview on the CTV Morning Show, Kohan described her experience of the first day of filming as,

''I think when I first arrived there was a beautiful blue sky day and I was like 'oh this is right. I feel at home here already.'''

More on this in our story.

Sullivan's Crossing throwback: When Morgan Kohan and Chad Michael Murray discussed their characters

Much like many of Carr's novels, Sullivan's Crossing is set in a small rural town in Nova Scotia, which becomes a place for healing for Maggie after she returns there from Boston.

In the CTV Morning Show, Kohan described her character as,

''She's kind of constructed this beautiful perfect life for herself in Boston and we find out in the first episode what goes wrong. But basically it all blows up on her...''

She added,

''She kind of needs somewhere to heal, recover, just take a breather and that happens to be the place where her estranged father is...''

While Maggie's move to Nova Scotia was after a major obstacle in her life in Boston, it gave her a chance to reconnect with her roots and estranged father once again.

After moving to the small town in Sullivan's Crossing, Maggie crossed paths with Murray's Cal Jones, a young man with a troubled past. Murray described his character as,

''Cal is our local mystery man and I think that's just because he likes to keep everything close to his vest and close to his heart. He's been through a lot of trials and tribulations that we will come to discover as the show goes on.''

The chance meeting of these very different characters sets the pace of the show, and we follow their lives in the small town. As Maggie adapts to her new surroundings and becomes familiar with her hometown, she discovers friends and love in the process.

Sullivan's Crossing is shot in Nova Scotia

Since the stars of the show couldn't stop talking about the lush greenery of Sullivan's Crossing, it is worth noting that the show was actually shot in Nova Scotia, Canada. While many shows are set in small rural towns, they are often shot in different locations.

Unlike Virgin River (another Carr adaptation), which is shot in Vancouver, the CTV series is actually shot against the breathtaking backdrop of Canada. As showrunner Roma Roth discussed in an interview with Variety, she wanted to make her show different from Carr's other adaptations and thus decided to set it in the place where she grew up.

This decision surely worked in favor of the show, as fans cannot help gushing about the beautiful scenery, including Murray, who shared his filming experience with Good Housekeeping.

"It's the greatest, genuinely. The scenery is stunning and it's like, 'Why not surround yourself with kind, loving people and beautiful scenery and picturesque landscapes?'"

He added that the Sullivan's Crossing cast feels lucky to spend more time out in nature while having the privilege to work on a beautiful show.

The show will return with Season 4 on CTV/The CW in 2026.
