Selena Gomez received her first acting Emmy nomination in 2024 for her role as Mabel Mora in Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. She was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. After her nomination, she spoke with the Hollywood Reporter about her feelings and expressed,

"I was just honored to be on such a show that was recognized. I feel so lucky, because there are so many great shows, and to even be considered, to have an opportunity like this, is such an honor. In my mind, I feel like I already won."

This recognition marked a major milestone in her acting career, as this was her first acting nomination. Previously, she was nominated for producing the series. Only Murders in the Building got 21 nominations the same year and won multiple awards, such as original music and lyrics for the song "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?"

Gomez further added that she received flowers from Martin Short and Steve Martin despite everyone being in different countries.

Gomez gives writers the "full credit" for Only Murders in the Building's fresh storylines

Gomez was then asked about how, even after 3 seasons, the storyline doesn't get repetitive, and there is always something new for the viewers. She answered by crediting writers for surprising them every time with something new to look for.

"I’m going to give the writers full credit, because they shock me. I’m a realist, so of course, in my mind, I think, “How many people could possibly be at our building and this happens?” And every time they lay out the storyline for me, they point out key arcs that each of our characters are going to go through. I’ve noticed that with my character, they’ve really allowed her to grow."

She also mentioned how the creator of the show, John Hoffman, always allowed her to develop any fresh idea and never silenced her voice if she felt anything wasn't right.

"Our creator, John Hoffman, always has these fresh ideas, and we’ll flesh them out together. If there are certain things that I don’t feel are right, I can easily voice them, and we all make it work together. I ask Steve and Marty for advice all the time on certain lines, and “Could I make it funnier this way?” It’s a big family, and I’m just happy we’re still here."
