Alexi Hawley's The Rookie has been an important part of ABC since its premiere in 2018. The police procedural series stars Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Mekia Cox, and many others in the main roles, and it follows the LAPD on their various cases.

The show's success naturally paved the way for a spin-off series, The Rookie: Feds, in 2022. However, it was cancelled after Season 1 due to the 2023 Hollywood double strike.

While the Feds run was short-lived, it was reported that showrunner Hawley is working on a new spin-off series set in Washington that, according to TV Line,

will follow a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act

While there was no update on the status of the spin-off series, Hawley recently discussed the show's future, saying:

“Ultimately, we’re waiting to hear what the needs are [at ABC], but I feel very positive about it.”

More on The Rookie spin-off series in our story.

The Rookie showrunner feels positively about the spin-off series

As he had earlier discussed with TV Line, Hawley seemed excited and confident about the script for the The Rookie spin-off series. However, there has been no news about the show's plot or characters, which might have worried the fans.

Earlier, Netflix canceled Hawley's thriller series The Recruit after two seasons. Despite demand and good ratings for this Noah Centineo series, Netflix's decision was shocking for both the showrunner and fans.

Talking about The Recruit's fate, Hawley discussed his fears about the spin-off series with TV Line:

“My caveat, said with a genuine laugh, is that I also felt very positive about Season 3 of [Netflix’s] The Recruit, and it ended up not happening,”

However, the above comment from Hawley suggest that he has already pitched the spin-off idea to ABC and he feels positively about it. While Netflix is infamous for cancelling even popular shows, ABC might give The Rookie spin-off a fair chance, considering it has been a staple procedural on the network for many years.

Discussing the franchise's future, Hawley added:

“But look, it’s apples and oranges [The Recruit and The Rookie]. We just got a Season 8 on Rookie, the show works really well for them…. Beyond that, it’s out of my hands.”

Since the network renewed the procedural for Season 8 earlier, it seems that it is interested in expanding Hawley's vision for the franchise.

The show is currently in its seventh season and continues to receive positive reviews and viewer ratings each week.

The Season 7 finale will air on ABC on May 13, 2025 and the synopsis of the upcoming episode reads as follows:

''John and Harper work together to catch Oscar; Angela investigates a bank robbery; Lucy and Tim learn to adapt to her new schedule, and Miles' first date takes an unexpected turn.''

With the show already renewed for Season 8, fans don't have to worry about the parent show's future and ABC might update on the spin-off's status soon.
