I firmly believe that 9-1-1 Season 9 must confront the most harrowing aspect of Bobby’s death

I still cannot believe that 9-1-1 killed one of its main characters, as Peter Krause's Bobby Nash made a heroic sacrifice for Chimney in Season 8 and died after he was exposed to a lethal virus.

While I initially believed Bobby's death was a ruse and would eventually come around, the show not only featured his funeral but also Chimney and Maddie named their newborn son Bobby to honour the legacy of their late fire captain.

Bobby Nash was not only one of the characters who led the 9-1-1 ensemble, but he was the glue that held the 118 together for eight exceptional seasons.

Determined and strong-willed, Bobby was never afraid to go into the lion's den, partly because he believed that he did not deserve to live.

Bobby's former life's tragedy often caught up to him, but he had eventually found a family with Athena and the 118, until the show tragically killed him.

I cannot believe that Bobby's death illegitimized the progress and repentance he did throughout the seasons, and 9-1-1 Season 9 must find a way to honour Bobby's legacy for good.

More on this in our story.

Bobby had a complicated past in 9-1-1

While Bobby Nash was the poster boy and the ideal fire captain of the 118, he had a harrowing past. Bobby's alcohol addiction is no news to fans of the show, it was also revealed that a back injury at his job also put him on painkillers, which further spiralled into a drug addiction.

Bobby's alcoholism, combined with this new drug addiction, was the cause of frequent fights between him and his wife, and one such fight led to a tragedy. One night, after a major fight with his wife, he accidentally left a space heater on in an apartment before heading to the roof.

While he dozed off on the roof, the heater engulfed the entire building in flames, and it was too late for Bobby to save his wife and kids. While Bobby tried his best, it was simply too late, and the fire consumed 148 lives, including his wife and children.

Consumed by his guilt, Bobby moved to LA and became a fire captain in the 118 before the 9-1-1 premiere. Through various pieces of his backstory, we learn that Bobby's guilt led him to choose this career, and he vowed to save 148 lives in repentance for the lives lost because of him.

As revealed in 9-1-1, Bobby also kept a record of all the lives he had saved.

I think the tragedy negated Bobby's repentance and the progress he made with Athena

While Bobby felt he was incapable of moving on and devoted his life to saving others, he eventually met Athena, and things changed for him.

While he still held himself responsible for the deaths of his wife and children, his guilt started to melt away in the hopes of a brighter future with Athena and her kids.

While Bobby occasionally had suicidal thoughts, even after Athena, his death was staged as a heroic sacrifice for his team. I cannot believe that 9-1-1 staged Bobby's death at a moment when he was starting to show real progress with Athena and starting to forgive himself.

I believe that Bobby would have sacrificed himself for any member of his team, but I cannot accept that he suffered in silence, knowing that he is giving away his second chance at life and robbing Athena of her happily ever after with him.

In addition, while Athena's decision to bury Bobby with his former family was wholesome, it undercuts his progress and the family he made in LA. While Bobby had family in Minnesota, he had been living in LA since the show premiered and had formed a family within the 118.

With Bobby's grave out of the picture (many miles away), I cannot think how 9-1-1 Season 9 will honour Bobby's legacy and address the progress he was making before his untimely death.

Many people felt a connection with Bobby, and his guilt brought in the mental health aspect in the show. However, 9-1-1 labelled Bobby's death as a heroic sacrifice and made his LA life feel less legitimate, which should be addressed in the upcoming season.
