The second season of Euphoria came to an end on HBO in 2022, and ever since then, fans of the show have been eagerly awaiting the third season. Being speculated to be the final installment in the series, work on the third season of Euphoria is currently in progress, and a potential release date before mid to late 2026 seems unlikely.

The upcoming season of the Sam Levinson-led show is also expected to feature a time jump to take into account the time that has elapsed since the sophomore season of the HBO show. If that were to be the case, having Zendaya's Rue Bennett kick off the yoke of addiction and be sober might be a great idea.

Here's everything that you need to know.

A sober Rue would add depth to Zendaya's performance on Euphoria season 3

Back when Euphoria hit the screens for the first time in 2019, it instantly struck a chord with younger audiences owing to its hyper-realistic portrayal of drug addiction and substance abuse widely prevalent among the teenage characters on the show, including and especially the protagonist Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya. The well-known actress was portrayed as someone struggling with addiction every step of the way on both the first and second seasons, with consequent withdrawal symptoms and relapses being a regular part of her character arc.

If Rue were to return to the upcoming third season once again as a drug addict, it might lead to a bland and lackluster performance from Zendaya. Being among the biggest Hollywood stars of the present day and age, Zendaya is capable of giving her character many aspects other than the addiction angle.

Zendaya seems to have outgrown playing Rue as a drug addict, and the time jump featured in the narrative of the third season could be used to have her turn her life around. If this isn't the case, Euphoria might have to deal with an excessively dire finale by presenting a world in which there's no redemption for its protagonist.

Zendaya speaks about playing Rue on Euphoria

Zendaya had previously described the experience of playing Rue Bennett as one of her toughest assignments to date in an interview with Variety magazine. She had mentioned:

"One of the greatest honors about being able to play her is every story that I have now gained when people come to me and they share their stories of sobriety. It’s so beautiful to me every single time, and I think I take on those stories with me and they become part of who each time I play her."

She further commented on an emotional note:

"I get very emotional about I because I care about her a lot because she represents a lot of people that need a lot of love. And she represents part of myself, and she represents part of Sam (Levinson). That that means a lot to me, and I just want people to be able to heal through her.”

Euphoria is available on HBO.
