ABC's Modern Family featured many couples and their struggles throughout its eleven seasons, each with their unique quirks. While each of the three main couples had their fair share of ups and downs on the show, Mitch and Cam were the most flawed.
Starkly contrasting in personalities that almost clashed with each other, Mitch and Cam's relationship was based on many lies. While most of their laugh-out-loud moments were hilarious compared to the other couples, it came at a cost.
The extended misunderstandings, constant bickering, and exaggerated competitiveness were comedy gold, but they only made their relationship more flawed as the show progressed.
More on Mitch and Cam's relationship in Modern Family in our story.
I think Mitch and Cam had many flawed moments as a couple on Modern Family
While Mitch and Cam were a fictional couple and their relationship was exaggerated to a point for laughs, I cannot get past how flawed it was.
One of the areas where their flaws truly shine is their parenting style towards Lily. There are many storylines surrounding Mitch and Cam and their different parenting styles for Lily. While all healthy relationships are built on differences, Mitch and Cam let their differences take over the best of their capabilities, affecting their parenting.
While they argued over what was best for Lily, their discussion spiralled into an argument almost every time. In the Modern Family episode, when they are trying to build a princess castle for Lily, this task blows up into an argument, each trying to prove that they can build the castle better.
Mitch and Cam were highly competitive and not just with other couples but also amongst themselves. Even when they claimed that they were fighting for Lily's sake, their individual needs were in full focus.
The episodes where they tried to go technology-free for Lily or dealt with a situation when Lily heard a bad word are examples of their competitiveness. In every instance, they were trying to out-parent each other.
When the situation became so dire, it was hard to ignore that their priority was not choosing the best for Lily but proving that they were the better parent for their daughter.
Mitch-Cam and their constant lying in Modern Family
Their clashing personalities always got the best of them in each episode. Almost all the storylines focusing on Mitch and Cam in Modern Family are based on lies. While lying is a healthy point of nearly any healthy relationship, Mitch and Cam relied on miscommunication or keeping things from each other to a fault.
Being a Pritchett, Mitch was judgmental like Jay and Claire, which became a disadvantage for Cam in many instances. Since Cam was flamboyant and expressed more freely than his husband, Mitch struggled to keep up with Cam's drama.
Being dismissive of Fizbo, his clothes, or his Missouri side, Mitch had difficulty accepting his husband. Even when he accepted him at the end of an episode, they were back at square one in the next.
Mitch lies about his financial troubles, Cam lies about his music teacher's job and gambling habit and Mitch even pretends to like a house because his husband likes it. The couple tried to avoid arguments at every turn by creating a web of lies.
While every other couple on Modern Family changed for the better and grew throughout the seasons, Mitch and Cam hardly showed any growth. While Mitch agreed to move to Missouri in the Season finale, it is hard to imagine the couple living a peaceful and happy life there because of how dismissive Mitch was about that place.
