Star Trek Generations introduced the world to one of the more mysterious realms in the galactic universe known as Nexus. The energy ribbon is a pathway to an extra-dimensional realm, which has the capability of letting a person live out a life they desire.

In the world of Star Trek we have encountered several aliens and planets, but Nexus stands out for the infinite possibilities it offers. Despite being a fascinating concept, Nexus never made an appearance in the Star Trek Universe again. It would be interesting to get an in depth look into the realm.

In the 1994 movie Star Trek Generations, El-Aurian scientist, Dr. Tolian Soran (played by Malcolm McDowell) gets obsessed with the idea of Nexus. Captain James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner) and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) stop Soran from entering the realm. But at a heavy cost.

Role of Nexus in Star Trek Generations

In 2293, USS Enterprise-B encounters the Nexus, when it get a distress call from a vessel transporting El-Aurian refugees trapped in the cosmic ribbon. While the ship tries to break free from the Nexus, Captain James T. Kirk is pulled into it. He is presumed dead.

Among the rescued refugees were El-Aurians Guinan (played by Whoopi Goldberg) and Dr. Soran. Soran lost his family when his hometown was destroyed by Borg and wants to return to Nexus so he can live out his life in the fabricated reality.

After 78 years, Captain Picard encounters Dr. Tolian Soran on board USS Enterprise-D. Soran had mastered a plan wherein he could get back to the Nexus by destroying two stars to alter the gravitation force and create a pathway for the energy ribbon to appear on the planet Veridian III. He manages to travel to the Veridian system. Seeing that his plan will endanger all the planets in the system, Captain Picard lands on Veridian III to speak to Soran.

As the star is destroyed, Captain Picard enters the Nexus. He finds himself in a beautiful home, surrounded by a loving wife and children. A life that he always wanted. He tries to understand what is happening but is puzzled by the turn of events. Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) appears as echo and tells him that space and time has no meaning in the realm.

Picard ends up meeting Captain Kirk, whom he had believed died years ago. Kirk is living out his retirement in a wooden house amidst mountains with his dog and lost love Antonia. While he has been there for several years, for Kirk it felt like he had just arrived. Picard makes Kirk see that the life he is living is not real even though he wishes so.

They return to Veridian III and stop Dr. Soran from destroying the stars. In the intense showdown, Kirk ends up falling from the bridge and gets buried under the debris. He dies a tragic death.

Understanding Nexus

Nexus offers a haven for people inside the realm. Each character experiences a difference time and space. The energy ribbon passes across the galaxy every 39.1 years. When the Nexus is passing, it can hail violent energy that can result in huge destruction, as seen in 2293 when the energy ribbon traps the refugee ships.

Nexus gave the audience the perfect point of meeting for the two iconic characters, Captain Kirk and Captain Picard.

Though many of the audience found the concept little difficult to comprehend, Star Trek has never failed to bring forth some of the more interesting concepts and ideas from across the galaxy.

The possibility of Nexus making a comeback is limited but when it comes to Star Trek, never say never. It would be interesting to find more about the realm and how other characters interact in it. With many Star Trek projects in the pipeline, we can hope to encounter the mystical realm again.
