I firmly believe Suits LA deserved a second season, despite its flaws and negative reviews

Suits LA has been canceled by NBC after just one season, and honestly, we saw that coming. Though the show was launched with much fanfare, it failed to garner the ratings or reviews required to sustain it for the long term. The comparison with its predecessor, Suits, only made matters worse.

However, despite all its flaws, I truly believe Suits LA deserved another chance. A lot of people were quick to judge it because it did not live up to the original series, but not every new show gets everything right from the start. Sometimes a series just needs time to grow, and that’s exactly what Suits LA was starting to do.

After a shaky start, the show was just beginning to stand on its own as Ted finally got free from the Lester and the mob boss case and started focusing on entertainment law, which is the USP of the legal drama. However, the show has been canceled without allowing the characters to flourish properly.

Why Suits LA deserved a Season 2 despite its flaws

It is true that Suits LA did not pull in big ratings. After an okay start, the viewership stayed low over the subsequent few weeks. NBC even tried to promote it with a special three-hour Thursday night marathon, and with the cameos of Suits cast members, but it didn’t make a big difference.

The show also did not become popular on streaming platforms, even though the original Suits did really well on Netflix. But this doesn't mean the concept itself was flawed beyond repair. In fact, NBC admitted that the series was getting better, just like the original Suits, as the season went on.

One of the biggest reasons fans didn’t connect with Suits LA was that it didn’t have the original characters like Harvey and Mike as protagonists. A lot of people said the magic of Suits came from their chemistry, and they weren’t wrong. Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams brought a lot of heart and fun to the original show.

But that doesn’t mean a spinoff has to copy them exactly. Suits LA introduced new characters with their own stories, led by Ted Black, played by Stephen Amell. His journey was not meant to be the same as the original show’s characters, instead, it was supposed to show a different side of the Suits world.

Many fans also complained about the acting, especially Stephen Amell’s performance as Ted. Some said he was stiff or lacked personality. But to be fair, his character was not supposed to be as flashy as Harvey Specter. Ted was more serious and thoughtful, and with more time, that side of him could have developed into something interesting.

I was excited to see how various plot points, which had been established in season 1, bore fruit in a potential second season – from Ted and Stuart’s frenemies bond to Erica and Rick’s will-they-won’t-they romance. Ted’s love triangle with Samantha and Amanda was something I was looking forward to as well. But with the cancellation, all these fascinating storylines have come to an abrupt end.

It is important to remember that NBC’s decision to cancel the show wasn’t only about the series’ performance. The network needed to make room for basketball games next season, thanks to a new deal with the NBA. Suits LA got cut along with other shows like The Irrational and Found. It was a business decision as much as a creative one.

Hence, the legal drama wasn’t perfect, but it was getting better. The show had potential and was just starting to find its voice. With more time, better character development, and stronger links to the original Suits, it could have turned into something special. That is why I believe that Suits LA deserved a Season 2 despite its shortcomings.

Suits LA is available to stream on Peacock.
