CBS officially greenlit the Yellowstone spin-off series starring Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton under the working title Y: Marshals.
Kayce, John Dutton's eldest son, will combine his experience with the Navy SEAL team to deliver 'range justice' in his area. In the parent series' finale, while the Duttons sold the ranch to Thomas Rainwater for the original price, the east wing was kept for Kayce and his family, and the spin-off series will follow his story.
While fans were bummed because Taylor Sheridan will not be headlining the new spin-off series, the show is in equally talented hands. CBS ordered the spin-off series to Spencer Hudnut (SEAL Team), who will act as the show's writer and showrunner.
With Kayce's spin-off series promising the best of both worlds, I think it has the potential to become a superior show to Rip and Beth's spin-off series.
More on Y: Marshals in our story.
Y: Marshals could continue the Yellowstone legacy in the best possible way
While Beth and Kayce are both interesting characters and deserving Duttons to have their own Yellowstone spin-offs, Kayce's Y: Marshals sounds like a more interesting series mainly because of its main character.
While Kayce had his fair share of shining moments in Yellowstone, the story favored Beth, and the majority of Season 5B focused on her pain and revenge for John Dutton's death. The final season also included many flashbacks of Beth and Rip's life in Texas and their revenge arc on Jamie, where justice was finally served.
With a major chunk of the story focusing on Rip and Beth, one cannot help but feel curious about the unexplored Dutton, Kayce. The flagship series first focused on the Dutton patriarch and then Rip-Beth, with Kayce not getting his proper due. In addition, Y: Marshals has the opportunity to explore his history with the SEAL team, something the flagship series did not.
Y: Marshals will likely add a modern twist to the Western genre
Kayce's Y: Marshals promises to provide the best of both worlds. According to Deadline, the synopsis of the upcoming show reads as follows:
“Combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
With Yellowstone showing almost every facet of the cowboy life, the new show promises to add its own spin to the Western genre with Kayce's involvement with the Navy SEAL. His re-joining will not only give him the closure he deserves, but will add a new layer to the genre.
While Beth and Rip moved away from the titular ranch, the finale suggests that the couple will most likely set up their own ranch outside of Montana, with Rip and Carter adopting the cowboy lifestyle.
Kayce's Y: Marshals also sets him as a new generation of cowboys but with an action-packed twist. In addition to adopting a cowboy lifestyle, Kayce will become one of the US Marshals, protecting his state's citizens and ensuring that the federal laws are properly met.
With this new take and Hudnut's involvement in the project, Kayce's spin-off series has the potential to go beyond Yellowstone and explore even bigger storylines, operating outside of the titular ranch. The story's premise also suggests more action and thrill as Kayce will likely ride out with his team, ensuring justice is rightly served.
With a dutiful and committed man like Kayce, the show has the potential to expand his past and future with the SEAL team and introduce modern cowboy problems not addressed in the parent show.
Y: Marshals has the potential to bank on its Yellowstone legacy while creating a unique name for itself in the genre.
