Every fan of The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) still fondly remembers the Young Sheldon season finale, which featured a surprise cameo appearance by Jim Parsons, the OG Sheldon Cooper, with his on-screen wife, Mayim Bialik's Amy Farrah Fowler.
Parsons, one of the executive producers of the spin-off show, was also heavily invested in the casting for his younger self. The actor has portrayed his iconic character, the idiosyncratic genius, throughout 12 seasons of TBBT. Additionally, Jim Parsons also served as a narrator for Iain Armitage's young Sheldon in the spin-off series.
While the spin-off series' finale featured the tragic death of Sheldon's father, Parsons surprised everyone when he confirmed his cameo appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon:
''I am going to be in the episode [finale]. It was more emotional than I thought it would be.''
He added:
''Part of it is because, you know, "Big Bang" was always done in front of a live studio audience, not unlike this. And the energy is very different because they're a single cam. So it's more intimate and it's just -- it's just different.''

The Young Sheldon season finale was a full-circle moment for Jim Parsons' TBBT character
The Young Sheldon season finale pleasantly surprised fans with an exciting cameo from Jim Parsons, or Old Sheldon. While the actor was not only slipping back into his iconic role after almost five years (since the TBBT finale), Parsons' cameo appearance also provided much-needed context for the spin-off series.
Through Parsons and Bialik's cameo appearances, the finale revealed that Sheldon is actually writing a memoir about his life, and Young Sheldon was a long retrospective narrative about his formative years in Texas, with his loving Cooper family. Additionally, since the season finale also featured George Sr.'s tragic and sudden death and subsequent funeral, it also provided closure to Sheldon as far as his father's death was concerned.
Sheldon never remembered George fondly in The Big Bang Theory, and his early memories of his father were always laden with misunderstanding. However, the Young Sheldon season finale was a full-circle moment for the TBBT protagonist, where he finally made an emotional confession about his father:
"For a long time I focused on my father's shortcomings. Now that I'm his age and have kids of my own, I realize he was just a person doing the best he could, and he did a lot. I didn't say it at his funeral but I can say it now. I loved my father, I will miss him forever."
This realisation on Old Sheldon's part was not only a wholesome conclusion for the spin-off but also the perfect closure for Parsons' long-running character throughout the two sitcoms.
Additionally, the season finale featured an older Sheldon, now a happy husband and father, reflecting on his past life. Gone were his silly (yet iconic) comic book tees, as he donned a more mature look, complete with grey hair and a robe. The details symbolized Sheldon's growth in the sitcom's universe and was a perfect send-off for the character, signifying his smooth transition into adult family life with Amy and his children.
Reflecting on his experience of slipping back into Sheldon's skin in the Young Sheldon finale, Parsons further revealed to Jimmy Fallon:
''It was really sweet to get to revisit those characters in a situation that was sort of similar, but very different. And the only thing that was weird was the first time she [Bialik] and I got on set, we did our first rehearsal and I was like, "Huh''...''
