Netflix’s latest Turkish drama, Letters from the Past, has just unveiled a hauntingly intimate trailer that’s already got viewers bracing for impact. Set to premiere globally on July 23, the limited series blends mystery, memory, and emotional reckoning into a tale that stretches across two decades. The heroine is Elif, a woman who finds a box of letters which were never given out by her mother’s high school pupils of literature class in 2003. Elif’s mother, being a teacher, assigned a project which required her students to write letters with the intent of delivering them in 2023. For whatever reason, these letters were never sent out. Now Elif, undertakes the task to bridge the gap between the past and the present.

And then comes the twist. In a soft but jarring voiceover, Elif says,

“I got a letter too. Written by my real mother.”

Just like that, the story pivots—from a gentle nostalgia piece to a personal mystery with potentially life-altering consequences.

Selin Yeninci leads as Elif with a performance that’s equal parts tender and relentless.
