If you still think Song Joong Ki's cameo in Queen of Tears was just a cheeky callback to his critically acclaimed character Vincenzo Cassano, you are wrong.
While Joong-ki did reprise his mafia-cum-attorney character for the K-drama, it was more than that. Firstly, the actor's fans were delighted to see him as the Cassano boss, who appeared as Hong Hae-in's (Kim Ji-won) divorce attorney.
A little digging also helped me find another connection between the two K-dramas, of their directors. Both Queen of Tears and Vincenzo were directed by Kim Hee-won, and it was a nice touch to bring back the iconic character.
In addition, this was not the first time that Ji-won and Song Joong-ki shared screens. They have previously starred together in Descendants of the Sun and Arthdal Chronicles.
More on this in our story.
Song Joong Ki's cameo in Queen of Tears was more than just a callback to Vincenzo
I still remember my excitement when I saw Song Joong-ki as Vincenzo Cassano in Queen of Tears Episode 8. Having devoured each episode of his thriller K-drama, I was looking for something similar, and he finally returned as Hae-in's divorce attorney, much to the shock of Yang-gi.
While Song Joong-ki had naturally reprised his much-acclaimed character for Queen of Tears, the connections to his cameo did not end there. The actor's cameo was not just a callback to his famous consigliere character in Vincenzo, but also to many other characters he had played so far in his career.
While Hyun-woo is immune to Vincenzo's charm and does not know who the famous lawyer is, his best friend offers a complete description of the rumours around him, which are filled with references to many Song Joong-ki characters.
Firstly, he describes him as:
''The youngest heir of a conglomerate family.''
This was a direct reference to Song Joong-ki's recent K-drama, Reborn Rich, which also became the second most-watched show on cable television. He played the character of Jin Do-jun, the Soonyang family's youngest grandson.
According to Yang-ki, a second rumour suggests that he is a soldier:
''A former soldier stationed abroad.''
Eagle-eyed fans (like myself) immediately recognised this callback to Song Joong-ki's breakthrough K-drama Descendants of the Sun, where he played the character of Captain Yoo Si-jin. Interestingly, this K-drama also had another connection as it also starred Ji-won in the second lead.
Ji-won played First Lieutenant Yoon Myung-ju, and most of her scenes with Joong-ki were quite playful and full of banter.
A third (and the most bizarre) rumour suggests that he is from space:
''Someone who came here on a spaceship.''
While this might look comical to some viewers, Song Joong-ki fans know that the actor also played a Space Guard named Tae-ho in a 2021 film called Space Sweepers.
Lastly, Yang-ki also called him a 'werewolf', referencing his character Chul-soo from the 2012 movie A Werewolf Boy, in which Song Joong-ki's character would turn into a werewolf at night.
What seemed like a cheeky cameo as Vincenzo in Queen of Tears was actually a silent nod to the actor's vast career and roles, and it made me realise the range of characters he has played so far.
In addition to all these characters, I was happy to see the merciless and ruthless Vincenzo back on my screen, who proves that morally grey characters could be so complicated and meticulous.
His aura and authoritative tone in the scene were unmatched, and the dream sequence where Yang-ki and Hyun-woo imagine him torturing them was hilarious. Vincenzo's parting words, that only evil can cut evil, echoed throughout his cameo, and it was a fun tribute to Song Joong-ki and his career.
