It would not be wrong to call Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones one of the most iconic villains in television history.

The wine-drinking, ever-scheming Queen of Westeros was always a step ahead of her enemies and eventually ended up on the throne.

Lena Headey’s performance as the cold-hearted Queen made the character even more special. Considering the powerful persona of Cersei, fans wanted an equally powerful end to her character.

However, she instead had a poetic ending in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones as she got crushed under rubble along with her brother and lover, Jamie. A section of the audience was left disappointed by the plot as they wanted an explosive death scene for her, which would give justice to her arc.

Well, Lena Headey also thinks the same. After the HBO series' conclusion in 2019, the actress, during an interview with The Guardian, revealed that she wanted a better death sequence for Cersei:

“I will say I wanted a better death. Obviously, you dream of your death. You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted.”

During the interview, Lena Headey also pointed out that though she was disappointed with the way her character died in Game of Thrones, she understands that the series creators could not have pleased everyone. There were always going to be people who disagreed with how things panned out with different main characters of the show:

“But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb.”

Cersei’s death scene was one of the reasons why fans started calling out Game of Thrones creators, David Benioff and DB Weiss, for a lackluster ending to the mega hit series. Other plot points in the finale that did not sit well with fans were Daenerys Targaryen’s sudden transformation into a ruthless ruler and Jon Snow’s banishment to the Wall.

For Cersei, audiences hoped that she would go down after a showdown with the heroes of the story, like Daenerys and Jon. Some people wanted Jamie to kill her, while others rooted for Tyrion. Some even vouched that a dragon should have devoured her. But in the end, it was debris from the falling roof of the Red Keep that took her life.

Since the conclusion of Game of Thrones, Lena Heady has been seen in the shows Beacon 23 and White House Plumbers. Apart from that, she has played voice roles in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, and Infinity Train in the past few years.

Along with Heady, Game of Thrones starred Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont, Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, and Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark.

All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are streaming on HBO Max.
