For the fans of Sherlock Holmes, a Joan Watson crossover from the CBS show Watson and the old franchise Elementary could be a major event, as expressed by Morris Chestnut in his recent interview with Deadline. I am not a big fan of Watson, but I'd watch every episode if Joan Watson, from Elementary, shows up. I hope I am not alone. Watson is a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes universe, where John is portrayed as returning to medicine after Sherlock Holmes is presumed dead.

In a surprising twist, Season 1 killed off Moriarty, Sherlock’s greatest enemy, which opens up many narrative paths for Season 2. Read on to know what the Elementary character's appearance would add to the show.

Morris Chestnut, star of the CBS show, has expressed interest in featuring Joan Watson from Elementary in the show. Sherlock Holmes has been adapted to many shows and films till now, and Watson's character, who returns to medicine when Sherlock, his friend, is presumed dead, is significant. In another popular series, Elementary, which aired from 2012 to 2019, Lucy Liu stars as Dr. Watson. Morris expressed his interest while speaking with Deadline. He said that it would be fun and nostalgic to see the same character appear on the show. Even though it’s not easy to justify her appearance logically (since Watson and Elementary exist in separate continuities), fans—and Chestnut himself—are enthusiastic about the idea.

Joan in Elementary was a trailblazing reimagining of the important character, which happened to be the first significant female version, and Elementary got a royal fan base for that. If she makes an appearance in the show, even for a brief screen time, it could be a major nostalgia hit for the fans and could boost interest in Watson.

However, as of now, the comment is not an official announcement but just wishful thinking on the part of the actor. Moreover, it could be fan-pleasing, but it could mess up the show's internal logic.

Is it possible for Lucy Liu to appear in Watson for real?

The CBS show is created by Craig Sweeney, who was also co-executive producer of Elementary. This suggests a link between the two shows, but they exist in a different universe, technically. If the makers could crack the narrative, making the actor appear in the show wouldn't be a problem. Morris Chestnut speaking the same language makes it more possible that the fans can also imagine a creative overlap somehow. She could reprise her Elementary character in some kind of crossover, flashback, or parallel role, which would be a huge moment for fans.

But the major blow is that Watson and Elementary have different timelines, backstories, and versions of Holmes. So, bringing in Liu as Joan Watson from Elementary can create a continuity conflict, meaning it doesn’t quite fit into Watson's world without bending the rules.
