After actress Kate Phillips, Sam Claflin has shared the disappointing news that his character, Oswald Mosley, will not return in the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man.
Putting an end to all the speculations, the Me Before You star revealed to Metro:
"I donāt know that I should not say anything, and keep the speculation going⦠but no, sadly, Iāll share ā Iām not in the film, though Iām so excited as a fan of the series.''
Sam Claflin played the real-life British aristocrat and politician Oswald Mosley, who was a major antagonist to Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby in Seasons 5 and 6. While the Peaky Blinders Season 6 finale ended on a cliffhanger for Mosley, Claflin will sadly not return in the movie.
The Immortal Man is set during WWII and will see Murphy reprise his character from the series, including the returning ensemble cast of Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Ian Peck, and Packy Lee. New cast members for the film include Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, and Jay Lycurgo.
While Kate Phillips' Linda will not return in the Peaky Blinders movie, the eldest Shelby brother, Paul Thomas Anderson's Arthur, is still not confirmed for the same.
More on this in our story.
Oswald Mosley will not return in the Peaky Blinders movie
While Tommy Shelby has faced many deadly villains during the six seasons of Peaky Blinders, including Luca Changretta and Inspector Campbell, Sam Claflin's Oswald Mosley was certainly one of the most dangerous, who even convinced the Birmingham leader that his days are numbered in Season 6.
While Tommy emerged victorious and somehow managed to see through his doctor's secretive alliance with Oswald Mosley, he was still very much of a threat to the gang in the series finale, which is why this recent news is such a bummer for the fans.
While Claflin will not reprise his role in the Peaky Blinders movie, he shared his excitement for the project:
"I donāt know any details other than the casting and some of the people in it. Iām thoroughly excited."
Teasing Oswald Mosley's return in any future projects, the actor added:
"The hope is that he is still alive. Well, I mean, Oswald Mosley lived until 84. He is still alive in the world, whether or not heās a part of the world.''
Why is Sam Claflin's Oswald Mosley not returning to the Peaky Blinders movie?
As revealed by creator Stephen Knight, The Immortal Man is set during World War II, which is where Oswald Mosley historically lost his influence and power. After the British aristocrat turned to Fascism in the 1920s, he founded the British Union of Fascists, which even lent its support to N*zi Germany and its leader.
However, after its disbandment in the 1940s, Mosley quickly lost his power and reign during World War II, which is why Sam Claflin is likely not returning for the Peaky Blinders movie. Reiterating this notion, Sam Claflin even addressed his character's absence in the movie, with Metro:
''Iāve heard rumours similar that [the film is] set in the future. I think Oswald Mosley kind of started losing light and his following during the war.''
Sam Claflin's absence also suggests that The Immortal Man will likely shift away from the real Peaky Blinders lore and will feature a personal and redemption arc for Tommy, as hinted by Knight. While political rivalry and Fascism were at the pinnacle of Seasons 5 and 6, the movie might take a more fictional and personal approach, concluding Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby's arc in the universe.
In conclusion, Sam Claflin's absence suggests that Tommy Shelby will be up against some new (and fictional) enemies, but Mosley will certainly be missed by the show's fans.
