When it comes to cake, the host of Super Mega Cakes crafts entire universes, rather than just baking. Duff Goldman has long been celebrated for his extravagant, creative creations, but when asked which occasions he prefers, he doesn't mention birthdays or weddings. It's something much more nerdy instead.

“I think my favorite cakes to make are really anything to do with, like, science‑fiction, right? There’s a lot going on in the science fiction…Plus I’m just a huge nerd.”

His love of science fiction shows in his cakes, which sometimes feature real aliens, starships, galaxy textures, and sugar-sculpted laser beams. Goldman infuses his work with the same sense of childlike wonder he brought to his own Star Wars obsession, whether it's a buttercream spaceship or a whole galaxy. It's an edible story, not just cake decorating.

In Super Mega Cakes, where each episode feels like a comic-con for bakers, his passion for the genre and his fine arts background come together. Duff shows that creativity knows no limits with a team of like-minded cake decorators and plenty of fondant, especially when equipped with a blowtorch and food coloring.

Super Mega Cakes host Duff Goldman’s sweet spot: Sci-Fi and sugar

Science fiction is more than just a pastime for Duff Goldman; it serves as a creative inspiration that has shaped some of his most famous cake designs. Duff has always been attracted to the surreal and is well-known for his massive creations on Ace of Cakes and, more recently, Super Mega Cakes.

His enthusiasm was especially evident during his time with NASA. Duff crafted stunning cakes to celebrate major space milestones at the Kennedy Space Center's Taste of Space event. One design celebrated the 55th anniversary of the lunar landing by featuring a rotating, edible representation of the moon.

At one point, he built a tall, detailed cake model of NASA’s Artemis SLS rocket. These aren’t just desserts; they are edible expressions of human ingenuity and creativity. Duff told reporters at the event,

It's really, for me personally, such a joy to do because it's all stuff that I have loved my entire life,

Duff's most iconic sci-fi cakes have blurred the line between pop culture homage and culinary creativity over the years. The life-sized R2-D2 cake he made for George Lucas himself, complete with more than 300 blinking LED lights and working droid sounds, is a fan favorite. He has called it one of his all-time favorite creations in interviews, describing it as the perfect mix of technical challenge and nerdy passion.

Duff discovers a unique playground within science fiction, where fondant transforms into futuristic landscapes and sugar becomes spaceships. He keeps coming back for more because of the genre's creativity and adaptability.
