Shawn Hatosy created quite the stir when he played the role of Dr. Jack Abbot in the popular medical drama, The Pitt. The actor plays the character of a combat medic turned emergency physician at the fictional Pittsburgh hospital in the show.
Created by R. Scott Gemmill, The Pitt, is a medical drama that features Noah Wyle and focuses on the staff of the emergency department at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
The show has gained acclaim for its realistic visuals of medical gore and its tense and high-octane format where each episode denotes one hour of the 15-hour work shift at the emergency department.
Shawn Hatosy has worked in an episode of ER, which was directed by John Wells, and the two have never looked back in terms of collaborations. Hatosy has worked in Southland and Animal Kingdom. He has also worked in movies like The Cooler, Alpha Dog, and more.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hatosy talks about his first Emmy nomination for The Pitt, his approach towards acting, and working with Noah Wyle.

While Hatosy found it difficult to portray a doctor, the creative team behind The Pitt and John Wells were sure of his ability. Talking about his character, Hatosy states that, “I knew that he’s the sort of guy who is very measured, very confident and very calm in the face of chaos.” He also mentions that after playing morally complicated men in his career, he enjoyed playing a character who was likeable.
“The part that’s most flattering is I see Abbot as an extension of me in many ways, both in his personality and just how he holds himself physically,” he states.
Talking about his first Emmy nomination for the role in The Pitt, the actor insists that his approach to acting will stay the same.
“I’m still going to fight for the things that I want, and I still see myself as a working-class actor…That’s what I am, and there’s a responsibility there. I take pride in it,” he states.
Even John Wells spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and mentioned that
“Noah is a deceptively extraordinary actor in the sense that he’s unbelievably powerful and yet reserved. It takes a lot to go head-to-head with Noah all the time, and we knew that Shawn could do it…He just has command presence; he can step into a room and take charge.”

Hatosy mentions that he did not think too much about how he looked when he played the role of Abbot in the show and was amused by the suggestion that he was being admired.
“I wasn’t too worried about what I looked like when I filmed it…On other shows, I’ve spent a lot of time killing myself trying to get the body and figuring all that sh*t out. And with this one, I was just like, ‘No, just let him be … me!’ And the idea that it’s landing is wonderful,” he states.
While Wells mentions that Shawn Hatosy will join the next installment of the medical drama if he is available, Wyle bluntly confirms that Abbot will be there in season two. Shawn Hatosy has been acting for 30 years and he has worked in everything from musicals to community theater. Therefore, he is proud of his working-class-actor approach.
The Pitt is available on HBO Max.
