Watson Season 2 premiere featured a highly awaited moment for fans as Dr. Watson came face-to-face with Sherlock Holmes. The world’s favorite detective has joined the show after being presumed dead for more than a year.
At the end of the episode, titled A Son in the Oven, Watson saw Sherlock at his home, taking food out of his refrigerator. Since the detective was believed to be dead and had met only Watson so far, fans are wondering whether he is actually alive or is being hallucinated by the doctor.
Morris Chestnut, who plays the lead in the CBS show, has now talked about Sherlock’s arrival in Watson Season 2. In an interview with US Weekly, the actor said even he is not sure whether Sherlock is alive or is just a figment of imagination for Watson:
“I’m still trying to figure it out myself. Is he here or is he not? It’s a very perceptive question. Quite honestly, at the time we filmed it, I didn’t know.”

During the interview, Morris Chestnut added that he is not sure about Sherlock Holmes being alive in Watson Season 2, as it was not clearly mentioned in the script of the first two episodes. He added that he did not even ask the series creator about Sherlock’s fate, as he only likes to focus on the script provided to him:
“At the time we filmed the first two episodes, I personally didn’t know. Because I don’t ask Craig [series creator] what is coming up in the future. I don’t ask him about certain things. I just read [what’s on the page].”
Chestnut further talked about how Sherlock’s return is going to impact Watson. He revealed that the doctor needed a person whom he could rely on for his medical as well as detective cases, and his best friend is now going to take that place in his life:
“Watson is a very smart doctor in his own right. He’s mentoring a lot of brilliant minds. However, he doesn’t have anyone that he normally can turn to when he needs to figure out something or where he gets stumped in a situation.”
He added:
“So Sherlock is who Watson believes is the smartest man alive [even if] a figment of his imagination. Once he’s around, Sherlock is that person that Watson can bounce things off of. Particularly when it comes to solving some of the medical cases outside of the hospital in a detective aspect of it, he can bounce that off of Sherlock.”
At the start of the series, it was established that Sherlock was killed by his archenemy Moriarty, after which Watson moved to Pittsburgh and resumed his medical practice. In Watson Season 2, Robert Carlyle plays Sherlock Holmes. In the upcoming episodes, it might be confirmed whether the detective has returned for real or is only being imagined by Watson.
Apart from Chestnut and Carlyle, the show stars Rochelle Aytes as Mary Morstan, Peter Mark Kendall as Stephens Croft and Adam Croft, Eve Harlow as Ingrid Derian, Inga Schlingmann as Sasha Lubbock, and Ritchie Coster as Shinwell Johnson.
Watson Season 2 airs new episodes on CBS on Mondays.
