Apple TV's sci-fi dystopian series Silo, based on author Hugh Howey's trilogy of books (Wool, Shift, and Dust), received massive appreciation and even topped the streaming charts for consecutive weeks when it debuted in May 2023.
Led by Dune fame, Rebecca Ferguson, the show became a massive hit and debuted for a sophomore season in November 2024. The show was also renewed for third and fourth (final) seasons.
Silo follows the story of a dystopian future in which the last remnants of humanity live in large underground bunkers that extend up to 144 levels. With time, these bunkers have evolved into fully functioning societies with a proper hierarchy.
While Howey's source material is nuanced enough, showrunner Graham Yost has mastered the adaptation and tried to bring the author's vision to life. The duo faced their challenges initially, but their partnership succeeded because Yost was a fan of the books.
Talking in an interview on HeyUGuys, Yost revealed his fondness for Howey's Silo trilogy and how their decision to not change the opening scene in Episode 1 worked for the adaptation:
''Let's start it the way you did with this story about the sheriff and his wife and then take it from there. It was risky in a certain degree because we don't really meet the true heroine of the story till towards the very end of the first episode.''
He added:
''But I felt that was still the right way to go. So I think that helped.''
Here's how Silo's adaptation came into being.
Graham Yost and Hugh Howey discussed Silo adaptation
While most creators and shows tend to deviate from the source material, Yost's Apple TV show has closely followed Howey's work. The natural changes in the story and characters have even enhanced the storyline, perfectly aligning it with the small screen.
Talking about his love for Howey's books, Yost added:
''I was lucky enough to get the nod to work on this adaptation because I love the books and that was my instinct right from the beginning.''
Howey then discussed how he was sure about Yost's prowess as a showrunner, and he even respected his vision for his Silo books adaptation.
''Handing over a project to people who have incredible track records, a lot of talent, bring their own creativity and imagination into it. It's very relaxing. It's very easy. Just the work has been in great hands the whole way.''
While Apple TV's Silo Seasons 1 and 2 have added some original storylines, they have been faithful (to the books) in their adaptation. Seasons 1 and 2 covered Howey's first book, Wool. Seasons 3 and 4 will adapt Shift and Dust, respectively.
In addition to Ferguson, Rashida Jones, Common, Tim Robbins, Steve Zahn, and many more actors also star in the series.
Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Apple TV.
