I think Kirk’s joy after being demoted to Captain in Star Trek IV shows his true personality and here’s why

Captain Kirk (played by William Shatner) is one of Starfleet’s celebrated officers in Star Trek, who has time and again established the fact that his experiences and leadership skills sets him apart. Years after Star Trek: The Original Series, when we meet the distinguished crew members of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), the audience is re-introduced to Kirk as Admiral. But the title does not match the iconic Starfleet officer.

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), as a disciplinary measure he is demoted to Captain, something that he enthusiastically accepts. After he is given his reduction in ranking, which would allow him to take the command of his starship, Kirk fails to hide his joy. As the others in the room celebrate the hearing, one thing is clear, Kirk loves commanding a ship and venturing into the unknown more than the designation.

What happens to Kirk in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home?

In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Admiral Kirk would end up self-destructing the USS Enterprise to fend off the Klingons while trying to rescue Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy) from the planet Genesis. Not to mention he had stolen the Enterprise in the first place to go on the quest. However, they did have a back-up spaceship in the form of Klingon's Bird-of-Prey, which the crew would skillfully take over.

In The Voyage Home, Kirk and his crew on the Bird-of-Prey learn about a mysterious alien entity that is threatening to destroy the Earth. They decide to go back to 1986 San Francisco to transport two humpback whales, who can probably communicate with the alien probe and stop further destruction.

Kirk and his friends manage to find nuclear power, construct a concrete tank aboard the Bird-of-Prey and beam aboard the two humpback whales’ named George and Gracie. They come back to Earth and stop the devastation in the nick of time.

Admiral Kirk gets demoted to Captain

Kirk and his crew gather in front of the Federation counsel for their hearing. From stealing the USS Enterprise to his actions against the Klingons, they face several charges. But since they saved the planet, the charges are dropped against them except the one against Admiral Kirk for disobeying authority.

The sentence for his crimes is a rank demotion to Captain. For most people losing the position of Admiral may come as a disappointment, but not for Kirk. He was more than happy to accept the ‘punishment’ and take over the commanding duties of the newly commissioned USS Enterprise -A. He would go on to appear as Captain in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

It is interesting to note that in Star Trek: The Motion Picture when Admiral Kirk informs Captain Will Decker (played by Stephen Collins) that he will be taking over the command of the spaceship, Kirk appears quite elated despite the circumstances.

Captain Kirk has saved the galaxy more than his fair share and even at the cost of personal loss sometimes. InThe Search for Spock while he does steal and destroy the USS Enterprise, he ends up losing his son at the hands of Klingons. Kirk’s actions also ensure that Genesis does not fall into the hands of Klingons. With his life dedicated to space exploration, it is only fitting that Captain Kirk will only find joy commanding the USS Enterprise along with his beloved crew mates.
