While The Big Bang Theory started out with a unique set of main characters, they became the best sitcom group on modern television.

I think Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard's science nerd group found their footing and balance when Penny moved across the hall from them in the show's pilot. While she initially started hanging out with them for free food and wifi, she soon became a core part of the group.

To a group holed up in their apartment playing Dungeons & Dragons and reading comic books, Penny was a breath of fresh air and their (much-needed) window to the outside world.

More on Penny's influence on the core group in The Big Bang Theory in our story.

I think Penny's social awareness saved The Big Bang Theory nerd group

While this statement might seem too bold, the show suggested that all the group members might have ended badly if Penny had not moved across the hall from them.

Throughout The Big Bang Theory, Penny was not only the group's link to the outer world but also somehow saved them from a lonely and sad future. Because of Penny, the core group created almost all the social female bonds, which evolved into mature, romantic relationships and eventually into beautiful marriages.

The Big Bang Theory even sneaked in a little 'what if' scenario in Season 8 Episode 7, when actor Billy Bob Thornton guest-starred as Dr. Lovis. While his total obsession with Penny and later with Amy and Bernadette led to a humorous episode, he was eerily similar to the show's core group.

Dr. Lorvis had it all: Sheldon's lack of social awareness, Howard's creepiness, Raj's eerie childishness, and Leonard's sense of entitlement. While he was the episode's antagonist, he possessed all the qualities of a nerd, which were too similar to the core group.

The only thing Dr. Lorvis lacked was Penny's friendship, which changed the group's trajectory for the better. She not only brought a perfect balance to the group as a whole but also made each member of the group the best possible version of themselves.

I think Penny helped the group to evolve in The Big Bang Theory

Right from the moment she moved across the hall, she became the group's anchor in The Big Bang Theory. While Sheldon and the others initially considered her a ditzy blonde, she proved that her street-smart brain can easily outweigh their combined knowledge about science.

While Penny was no match for the group's intellect, her social awareness and ways of the world were much more important for the group to interact with the outside world.

In her own unique way, she was compassionate (even while being savage) to all the group members and made them the best version of themselves.

Her romantic relationship with Leonard throughout The Big Bang Theory proved that she was beyond physical appearances and certainly did not hesitate to call him out whenever he was out of line.

She adopted an equally savage attitude towards Howard, who would hit on her initially. She again called him out on his creepy and misogynistic behavior towards women, which eventually transformed him into a loving husband to Bernadette.

She was a much-needed influence on Raj because she nurtured and accommodated his feminine side, something the core group never did. She was patient enough with him and often made him a part of her ladies' night, which made Raj feel welcome.

Lastly, she was the best influence on Sheldon, who learned the true meaning of friendship after meeting her on The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon, the socially awkward man-child of the group, grew significantly with Penny and eventually became the best version of himself till the finale.
