Star Trek: Picard is a nostalgic ride for The Next Generation fans, with many of the legacy characters making an exciting comeback. One character, who appears briefly on the show is Wesley Crusher, played by Wil Wheaton. Crusher appears in Picard Season 2, episode 10 titled ‘Farewell’ fleetingly to recruit Kore Soong (played by Isa Briones) to join the Travelers. In Star Trek: Prodigy the audience got a glimpse of the capabilities of the mysterious people called the Travelers. Crusher’s reappearance in Picard makes the concept even more intriguing.
The Travelers first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 episode 6 titled ‘Where No One Has Gone Before’. They are a technologically advanced species who are native to the planet Tau Alpha C. They have the ability to alter space, time and even warp field with their mind. They hand-pick people to serve as operatives.
In ‘Where No One Has Gone Before’, the USS Enterprise-D crew will bring aboard a Starfleet propulsion expert to improve the ship’s adeptness. His mysterious assistant is from the Tau Alpha C. During the warp test, Crusher notices that the assistant was drifting in and out. The assistant reveals that he is a Traveler and shares that he is looking for prodigies such as Crusher.
In The Next Generation, Crusher would time and again showcase his many distinct abilities that made him a standout character. At the end of the series, Crusher leaves the Starfleet to join the Travelers. In Star Trek: Prodigy, Wesley returned as a Traveler. Unlike The Next Generation, we get to see him in action, albeit briefly, in Prodigy.
Wesley Crusher’s appearance in Star Trek: Picard
While the information about the Travelers and their abilities is limited, it was interesting to see Crusher appear in the 21st Century to carry out his role as a member of the mysterious group. Crusher now monitors flow of time.
In Picard Season 2, Kore is a synthetic clone created by Dr. Adam Soong (played by Brent Spiner). Kore leaves Soong after learning about his evil intentions. Wesley appears in Los Angeles in 2024 to recruit Kore into the Travelers. He tells her that she is meant to take on a bigger role in the galaxy. They depart to play the god of space and time in the galaxy. The amusing interaction between the two is short and leaves the audience wanting for more.
While, Star Trek once again gave the audience Traveler Crusher, his apperance is short-lived. Picard and his friends were finding ways to fix the timeline in Season 2 and Crusher could have contributed greatly to the storyline. Also a reunion between Picard and Crusher after decades would have been wonderful to watch.
As the Travelers remain one of the more interesting concepts in Star Trek, it would be exciting to see if Crusher and Kore would make a come-back to showcase the ways of Travelers and how Kore is being mentored by Crusher.
