I was today years old when I learnt the reason Spock disappeared from Prime timeline in Star Trek

Mr. Spock has played a significant role in multiple storylines in Star Trek, from serving as the Science Officer in The Original Series to acting as an Ambassador who works discreetly to bring the Romulans and Vulcans together in The Next Generation. And it is only ‘logical’ that Spock’s (played by Leonard Nimoy) disappearance from the Prime timeline is as fascinating as the life he lived.

In J.J. Abrams’ movie Star Trek (2009), Ambassador Spock attempts to create a black hole to stop a Supernova from destroying Romulus, but instead it draws him into the Kelvin timeline. He disappears from the Prime timeline and lives out his life in the alternate timeline. The Federation did not know about the events and listed him as missing.

In 2387, when the planet Romulus was threatened by a Supernova, Spock decides to help but is unsuccessful in his plan. Instead, he finds himself in the Kelvin timeline. But he is not the only one who made the unforeseen journey.

Nero (played by Eric Bana), a Romulan who holds Spock liable for the destruction of his planet, also ends up in the alternate timeline in 2233. Prime timeline Spock's interaction with the Kelvin timeline Spock (played by Zachary Quinto) and Kirk (played by Chris Pine) is one of the more exciting segments in the movies.

Spock disappeared while trying to save the Romulans

The Romulan Star Empire was under the threat of a Supernova in the 24th Century. The Romulans had reached out to the Federation for assistance to rescue their citizens before the Supernova destroys their home world. But the help doesn’t come. Spock instead plans to use red matter to create a black hole that can stop the Supernova.

While the idea appeared concrete to the half-human, half-Vulcan Ambassador, it did not work. Spock was too late, and the Supernova ended up destroying Romulus along with many other planets in the system. Nero attacks Spock’s spaceship as he is trying to stop the Supernova. The black hole sends Spock’s vessel as well as Nero to the 23rd century in an alternate timeline.

Nero arrives in 2233 in the alternate timeline, where he is looking for Ambassador Spock. He destroys USS Kelvin and even kills Kelvin Timeline James T. Kirk’s father, George Kirk (played by Chris Hemsworth). Spock arrives in the Kelvin timeline 25 years after the destruction of USS Kelvin. Nero blamed Spock for the destruction of Romulus, which killed his family. In vengeance, he destroys Vulcan using his space mining vessel.

Ambassador Spock is unable to return to the Prime timeline and instead chooses to help repopulate the Vulcan race and extend his knowledge to the young crew of the USS Enterprise. He died in Star Trek Beyond at the age of 161.

It is interesting to note that the subject of Ambassador Spock’s disappearance is hardly discussed in Star Trek: Picard, which heavily explores the events of the Supernova that destroyed Romulus. In Season 1 of the series, we learn that Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) was on a mission to help the Romulans. After the Synthetics went rogue and the construction of fleets to rescue the Romulans was halted, Picard resigned from Starfleet.

Picard or the Federation is not aware of what happened to Ambassador Spock. He is presumed missing or dead after Romulus was destroyed. It is sad that Spock did not get a proper farewell in the Prime timeline. That said, Spock will remain the only character to have played a significant role in two timelines. His legacy lives on in two worlds.
