According to Barbara Corcoran from Shark Tank, successful people can be differentiated from the rest based on a straightforward principle, that is, persistence. Often people regard success as something that happens to lucky folks or to the ones who are naturally talented or intelligent.
Still, Barbara says that she made a name for herself in the business industry by nothing but "out-trying" everyone else. She is a queen of real estate in New York City and in a prior video, she shared how she established herself in a market dominated by what she calls the "old boys club."
In a podcast with fellow investor and billionaire Jamie Kern Lima, Barbara candidly explained that being willing to try harder than anyone else is what brings confidence and success to an individual. The Shark Tank investor claimed,
"I will out-try anyone, anyone in the universe, and try harder than anybody else and I'll win because of it."
Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran highlights the power of trying
What Barbara Corcoran, the Shark Tank investor, said during the podcast underscores that success is not just about talent, but it is also about perseverance and resilience with a commitment to one's goals. She also believes that effort is a habit that can be cultivated by trying every time.
Talking about self-confidence, Barbara says that the ones who are consistent despite facing setbacks in their path are the ones who get closer to success. She talks about how a lot of people feel like they might be unworthy and even struggle with self-doubt. By giving her own example, she said,
"But, while you're feeling unworthy, you don't feel like you have the right to try. You form a new habit of yourself if you just try. The reason I'm confident is because I know I'll out-try anybody, I know I'll always show up. I know I'll get back up. That's what teaches me self-confidence."
Another aspect of trying is not focusing on the failures. The Shark Tank investor says that the ones who are successful do not spend a lot of time grieving what they do not have and instead, work towards it. The caption that she put for this video indicates just that. It reads,
"The difference between successful people and others is how long they spend time feeling sorry for themselves."
Corcoran says that even though people feel moments of self-doubt, these become self-sabotaging when they are repeated in a pattern. She says that the key to overcoming it is viewing these instances of weaknesses as a part of the process instead of permanent roadblocks in one's journey toward success.
She says that people who achieve greatness do not let failures define them nor do they spend a lot of time feeling sorry for themselves. Instead, they acknowledge what they are feeling in the moment, learn from it, and move on.
She says that this feeling of unworthiness must be unlearned from one's thought process and replaced with something more productive. Explaining the same, she says,
"But still, there are times where you feel unworthy, intimidating and as long as it doesn't happen all the time, keeps you honest. But it's a trait you have to learn to undo and replace with something else. By trying, just trying."
Shark Tank season 16 episodes are released weekly on ABC at 8 PM Eastern Time on Fridays. They are later available to watch on Hulu.
