Black Bird on Apple TV+ feels like a careful game where every move matters and can change everything. The main character, Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), used to have a bright future as an athlete but ended up in trouble for dealing drugs. Now, he’s facing ten years in prison. But then the FBI offers him a deal. He can go to a super-maximum security prison and get close to a suspected serial killer named Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) to make him confess where the bodies are, or rot in prison for ten whole years.

The show stands out because of how it focuses on the complicated relationship between Jimmy and Larry. It’s less about action and more about the conversations, the mind games, and the tension between them. Larry’s character is creepy but also strangely charming, which makes things even more intense. The rest of the cast, including Ray Liotta (in one of his final roles), Greg Kinnear, and Sepideh Moafi, also bring strong performances that add depth to the story.

The show was developed by Dennis Lehane. He is a well-known author and screenwriter famous for writing Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone. His experience in writing crime and mystery stories really shines through in Black Bird. With only six episodes, this Apple TV+ show is short but very focused. Thus, delivering a tight and suspenseful story without any wasted moments.

The writing is smart and keeps the suspense high the whole time. The 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating shows how well the show is made and how much people who have watched it have loved it. If you like crime dramas that make you think and keep you on edge, Black Bird on Apple TV+ is definitely worth checking out.
