Created by Rebecca Cutter, Hightown is a crime drama series starring Monica Raymund, Shane Harper, Riley Voelkel, and others. The series began airing on Starz in 2020 and has three seasons, with the last season airing last year.

Recently, Netflix added all the episodes of the three-season show, and viewers have their next binge-watch recipe. The interesting bit is, Hightown is being compared to Netflix shows such as Untamed.

The show focuses on Jackie Quiñones (Raymund), who is an agent with the National Marine Fisheries Service in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Jackie is an alcoholic and dealing with past trauma, while also investigating the murder of a woman in her area.

Hightown also has other interesting characters like Ray Abruzzo (played by James Badge Dale). He is a Massachusetts State Police detective dealing with traumas from his past.

The show is gritty and impactful and there are many reasons why it is being billed as the next Untamed.

Why Untamed fans must watch Hightown next

Apart from being another binge-worthy addition to the catalogue of Netflix, Hightown is a great watch for lovers of Untamed because the two shows have certain peculiar similarities.

Jackie is a complex character. She is a lesbian who suffers from alcoholism, drug addiction, and obsessive behavior. Even though she is a genius at solving crimes, she must also deal with sobriety and stay one step ahead of the secrets and betrayal that engulf her small beach community. Therefore, much like Kyle from Untamed, Jackie is also a federal agent who has to deal with a dark past while also solving a crime as a part of an overlooked department.

Critics have also noted that both the murder-mystery shows use the setting as a character. In Untamed, Yosemite is an overarching and looming presence and in the Starz show, it is the surroundings of Cape Cod and the beach community.

Both shows have a decent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and like Untamed, the Starz show has also received praise for its central character’s complexity and how the show tackles the opioid epidemic. Interestingly, even Untamed focuses on drugs.

Why Hightown is a must-watch

Many viewers have already begun sharing in their reviews of Hightown, and according to The Mirror, viewers have mentioned that the show is a “fast-paced drama” that keeps the audiences entertained. The show also has a certain “messiness” and complexity between the characters, which makes it an interesting watch, fans have observed.

Characters in Hightown are morally gray as they lie and manipulate their way out of a situation. Fans have noted that the show has an “impulsiveness” and “passion” that make it move forward and keep the viewers hooked.

Ultimately, Hightown is a gritty show that focuses on the struggles of complex characters, especially its protagonist. The role of Jackie is played by Monica Raymund, who is known for her roles on The Good Wife and Chicago Fire. The actress embodies the character and gives a scene-stealing performance as a strong and layered woman who must balance her job and personal life.

While the show is a murder-mystery and investigative thriller, it also has many compelling emotional moments as the story focuses on the complex lives of individuals who have buried secrets and trauma.

Therefore, viewers who liked the mix of investigative thrills and character-driven drama in Untamed, will also love to watch Hightown. The show has the same balance of emotions and thrills, and is elevated by hard-hitting performances.

Hightown is streaming on Netflix.
