Who did Sterling K. Brown play in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and what happened?
Sterling K. Brown played the role of dentist Philip Davidson in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 5 Episode 14. He became the prime suspect in a murder case, yet his sharp wit and persuasive charm kept Jake and Captain Holt on edge throughout the night.
Philip tried his best to gaslight Captain Holt and Jake. Jake lied to make Philip confess to his crimes, which, of course, backfired initially since he was too good at his answers. Jake even used his bad singing skills and threw a chair that shattered the interrogation room glass and left Jake with a bleeding nose. He did this to intimidate Philip, but that failed as well.
He did not give any leads until Jake understood his trigger point. Jake tactfully lied about the murder weapon, and this is when Philip was triggered, and he confessed to killing his business partner, Robert Tupper. Philip stole drugs from the dentist clinic, and when his business partner, Robert, found out and was about to call him out, Philip killed him and disposed of the weapon in a way that nobody could ever recover. But no one gets past Jake Peralta and Captain Raymond Holt, even if you are Sterling K. Brown!
Why did Sterling K. Brown guest-star in Brooklyn Nine-Nine?
Sterling K. Brown's guest role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine was no coincidence. Brown, who was then playing Randall Pearson in NBC's drama This is Us, had one vital reason to play a cameo role in the series.
Let's roll back to Sterling K. Brown's Emmy-winning speech in 2017, where he mentioned Andre Baugher, the last Black person to win the award before him (via Time).
"I may have lost some of y’all, but you know. Google it. And 19 years ago, Detective Frank Pembleton won this joint, as impeccably played by Andre Braugher. I just want to say whether it’s at Stanford or on this stage, it is my supreme honor to follow in your footsteps."
Baugher won the Emmy for Leading Actor in a Drama series in 1998. He was awarded for playing Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC's Homicide: Life on the Street. He won his second Emmy in 2006 for his role in FX's Thief.
Baugher played the role of Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. And it was no surprise that Sterling K. Brown wouldn't miss the opportunity to share screen with someone he admires so much.
