Boston Blue is not just a title but a complete shift for the Blue Bloods world. Fourteen seasons set the tone for a police drama tied to New York City, and now CBS is ready to push it into new ground. The spin-off is scheduled to premiere on October 17, 2025. Cameras are already rolling in Boston, which is also the city that frames the name of the series.

Donnie Wahlberg is back in uniform as Danny Reagan. As per Collider, He did not hide how he felt about it, stating:

“We are incredibly excited about this show, and cannot wait to discuss it with all of you and to share with the world.”

The words come across as more than promotion, and underline how personal this new start feels for an actor who has played Danny for years.

The move from New York to Boston sets the tone. The production is described as a continuation that still manages to open a new door. Familiar pieces remain in place, but the background is different. That combination will be central when the first episodes arrive.

The protagonist revisits Danny Reagan

Danny Reagan is tied to New York in the memories of Blue Bloods viewers. In Boston Blue, he leaves that city behind to begin again. According to Collider, Wahlberg admitted that the idea of returning was intimidating at first. It felt heavy as well as daunting, but soon transformed into something more rewarding than he expected. His own words point to that shift: taking on the role again became something he could not even dream of.

The choice to keep Danny at the center creates continuity. He remains the anchor between the two series. The difference now is the environment around him, and the way Boston itself reshapes his story.

The partner played by Sonequa Martin-Green

A new figure joins Danny in this stage. Sonequa Martin-Green, remembered from Star Trek: Discovery, plays his partner in Boston. Wahlberg described the process of working with her and with the rest of the cast as “seamless and wonderful and fun and exciting,” as per a report by Collider. From his account, the interaction was smooth, without friction.

This partnership introduces a fresh layer for Boston Blue. A pivot from the previous series, viewers will not only see Danny adapting to a new city, but also develop a new professional dynamic.

Faith, family, and tradition as central themes

Boston Blue keeps the backbone that made Blue Bloods last. Wahlberg emphasized that faith, family, and tradition remain at the heart of the story. These three ideas, which defined the previous series of 14 seasons, return as the guiding thread for the spin-off.

The plan is to keep that core alive in a new setting. Wahlberg made it clear that the show looks forward to bringing these values back to television on Friday nights at 10 pm. That timeslot is the one CBS has chosen to house the new project.

Additional cast confirmed for Boston Blue

Boston Blue comes with a new ensemble. Regan's partner is Sonequa Martin-Green, playing the role of Lena Silver. Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, Gloria Reuben, and Marcus Scribner are confirmed as part of the cast as well.

Hudson will star as Reverend Peters, a pastor and the Silver family patriarch, while Lawson will play Lena's stepsister and a Superintendent in the Boston Police Department as Sarah Silver. In addition, Reuben stars as Mae Silver, Lena's mother and Sarah's stepmother, as the district attorney of Boston. Scribner will be seen playing the role of Mae Silver's son, Jonah Silver. T

ogether, they help set the tone for a production that blends known figures with new energy.

Recasting and special appearances

The family ties are not forgotten. Sean Reagan, Danny’s son, appears in Boston Blue, but with a change of actor. Mika Amonsen takes over the role previously played by Andrew Terraciano. This recasting updates the character while keeping his place in the story.

In addition, Bridget Moynahan returns as Erin Reagan. She is set to appear in the pilot episode. Wahlberg has also suggested that other Reagan family cameos are in line.

Production and October premiere

Filming is happening in Boston right now. Before reaching CBS, a sneak peek of the series will be screened in advance at Mipcom Cannes on October 12, 2025. The preview marks the debut of the spinoff outside production circles.

The official premiere follows a few days later, on October 17, on CBS. Friday nights at 10 pm will once again feature Danny Reagan, now in a new city with new colleagues.

A new chapter for Blue Bloods

Boston Blue is set on the foundation of Blue Bloods and promises to build on it. Wahlberg, reprising his role as Danny Reagan, with Sonequa Martin-Green as a partner, the upcoming series features a combination of familiar and unfamiliar faces. The backbone of faith, family, and tradition is explicitly carried forward.

Wahlberg’s own words reflect how personal and exciting the process has been for him. For longtime viewers, the series offers both continuity and change. October will mark the point where one of CBS’s most consistent dramas moves into its next stage, this time under the Boston skyline.
