Invincible Season 4 had a presence at New York Comic Con. For a long time, the actor voicing the character of Thragg was kept a secret, but it looks like we finally know who is voicing the fan-favorite character in the popular Prime Video animated show. It looks like fans are celebrating the casting of The Hobbit's Lee Pace.
For the uninitiated, Pace played the role of Legolas's father, the Elvenking Thranduil, in The Hobbit movies. Aside from that, he also played Ronan the Accuser in the MCU. He has a distinctive voice, which makes him an ideal choice for a beloved animated show like Prime Video's Invincible. Robert Kirkman, who even created the comic, addressed the most important quality Thragg needs:
“I think the most important thing with Thragg is to, in every aspect of his character, convey how powerful he is.”
Explaining Invincible's Thragg:
The Invincible panel at NYCC revealed several things about the upcoming season, including the confirmation of the Thragg actor. The animated series has been slowly upping the pressure on Mark over three seasons. The first season saw Nolan Grayson reveal the dark truth behind the Viltrum Empire to Mark and beat Mark to a pulp.
In the second season, another Viltrumite, Anissa, proves to be a challenge for Mark, and the third season saw Mark pushed to his limits with Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). But now, Invincible Season 4 is not going to go easy with Mark, as he may come face-to-face with Thragg. While casual fans may not know the significance of the name, those who have read the comics are hyped. Kirkman teased how Thragg fits in the upcoming season:
“He’s kind of the next step beyond Conquest the same way that Conquest was in some ways the step beyond Nolan from the first season. I think that he’s just an all-consuming threat. He’s a bigger threat than Invincible has ever faced, to the point where it’s not just Invincible. He’s kind of bringing in everyone in the show, and things get really dire.”
In the comics, Thragg is someone whose age is undetermined. His father was one of Emperor Argall's closest advisors, and he himself fought in the Viltrumite Civil War. For some time, Thragg was also the regent to Argall's heir, but the latter went missing. Thragg is unable to find the heir despite his best efforts and is declared the Viltrumite ruler.
Under Thragg, the Viltrumite Empire became as vicious as it was across the galaxy, as Mark saw. He is still around and will undoubtedly be a deadly and vicious enemy for Mark. With The Hobbit actor Lee Pace voicing Thragg, we can expect the same depth and gravitas from him as Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Conquest had in the season 3 finale.
Back in June, Robert Kirkman teased a darker Mark for the fourth season:
Robert Kirkman sat down for an interview in June this year, in which he extensively discussed the Prime Video animated series. But one of the highlights of the interview was when he teased what fans can expect from the fourth season. The third season sees Mark evolve from a superhero with an aversion to taking a life to one who needs to cross the line. Thus, Kirkman teased a darker Mark Grayson for the fourth season:
"I think it’s good to give Mark as many outside influences as possible. One thing that we dealt with in Season 2 was, “Am I becoming my father?” And his fear of that. And one of the results of interacting with his father was that he brought Oliver home. Oliver has the same dad but is from an alien world. As Mark interacts with Oliver, he gets to see how Oliver sees the world versus how Mark sees the world. So, it’s an interesting contrast to see how someone who has superpowers, who shares the same father, and who lives in the same house can have a wildly different view."
He added,
"For Mark, his feelings can sometimes be scary when he seemingly agrees with some of the crazy things that Oliver is saying. For example, after he’s killed the Mauler twins. But the interesting note over the course of Season 3 is that Oliver says very harsh things that make you worry. Then, by the end of the season, the completion of Mark’s arc is that he’s more aligned with Oliver than he was before. So, by the end of this season, you should be worried for where Mark is headed in Season 4 and beyond."
