One of the more surprising twists in Ironheart is the revelation of Ezekiel Stane, son of the first supervillain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Obadiah Stane aka the Iron Monger. As Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) chases her ambitions in the first three episodes of Ironheart, she will meet Ezekiel, only he goes by Joe McGillicuddy (played by Alden Ehrenreich). Ezekiel will reveal that he is Obadiah’s son, who had died while trying to kill Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) aka Ironman.

Ironheart's first three episodes on Disney+ introduced Joe McGillicuddy as a black-market swindler who would meet with Riri to help her find something to complete her suit. He would name drop his famous father, shocking Riri and the audience.

Obadiah Stane’s name is a legend in MCU and rightly so. We first met the supervillain in 2008’s Iron Man. He was the COO of Stark Industries. Tony Stark would shut weapons manufacturing after he learns that the weapons by Stark Industries were used by terrorist organizations like the Ten Rings.

Obadiah Stane gets irate as he was responsible for the secretive dealings with the terrorist organizations. Eventually he would make a power play by creating a suit to stop Tony Stark, but gets bested by him and gets killed in the process.

How does Ezekiel Stane fit into Ironheart?

Riri would meet Joe to get some tech for her suit. Joe would share that he had a complex relationship with his father, but nothing else is revealed until episode 3. As twists go, Joe shares that his name is Ezekiel Stane and is Obadiah Stane’s son. He does not go by his real identity to keep away from his father’s legacy.

Obadiah Stane’s death was shrouded in secrecy in the MCU. It was believed that he had died in an accident, but the truth was that he gets killed after trying to end Ironman. Ezekiel grew up hating everything that his father did and stood for.

When he would ask Riri about her obsession with the suit, she says that it had very little to do with Ironman and more about her stepfather, who was a big fan of the hero and she wanted to make the suit in his memory. Ezekiel’s hatred for his father is more obvious, when he would tell Riri that she should consider herself lucky to have had role models like her stepfather, who saw good in the world. Instead, he had a father known as ‘Iron Monger’ who would become a supervillain.

Ezekiel is driven by ethics and would often cite the importance of it. In the comics, he does turn into Ironman’s nemesis as he sets on the path to seek vengeance for his father. But in Ironheart so far, he appears more subdued. Whether Ezekiel will go on to play a more important role in Ironheart remains to be seen.
